Default New 944 Shift boot/**** combo won't fit

I just purchased a new Porsche® 924/944 Shift Boot and **** Combo http://www.automotion.com/shift-boot...1979-1985.html
for my early 1985 944 and the thing just doesn't fit! I know that this ****/boot combo doesn't use any of the rubber bushings or wire clip like the factory ****. I tried everything and just can't get the thing to fit all the way down on the shift lever. I was using all my strength and just couldn't do it. Is there a trick, or something that I am missing? Has anyone on here installed one of these?

Thanks in advance!
