Default Aluminum arm Ball Joints

I've a pair of aluminum arms laying around that I've been wanting to rebuild.

I took the ball out of one and cut open the ball joint cartridge from an early steel arm.

I got out the dial calipers and mic'd the diameters of the two different size ball joints.

The early diameter for the steel arms is : 0.983"

While the aluminum arms is : 1.063"

I have a sneeking hunch that the later aluminum ball joints "guts" is the same as the late 80's 911 replaceable cartridge.

Anyone have a dead 911 ball joint they can grind open???

If so this means the ball joints on the aluminum arms can be replace for around $40 each and a little labor.

Yes I know never rebuild an aluminum arm that has damage to the ball joint socket.

We've done this also. The 924 replaceable joint will slip right down into the arm but the ball is smaller so it's not real safe. That's why we came up with our own kit. I'll look into the 911 thing...

The 944's ball joint pin is available for ~15$ from 944Racing.com... It worked fine for me...Bruce
And, nope - I'm not affiliated....

Yep, but the pin rarely goes bad. It's the nylon bushings inside around the pin that fail and cause the sloppiness. That's why we don't include a new pin in the kit.....

The ball joints are easy to rebuild. I did it in about 3hrs for both sides including beer break.

I have to say I'm very impressed with the KLA ball joint kit. At $50 it's real close to the best price I can find on the 911 ball joint cartridge.

I think the white non-filled plastic may be too soft. I would have used delron. Then I don't know what the hardness is of the white plastic.

Any aluminum arm that has the ball riding in the aluminum because the plastic has gone south is circumspect and should be fully QC'd before reuse.

Having the ball pull out of the arm at speed can ruin a good day.

The material is nylon-66. Very common for use in this application.

911 ball joint won't fit. Pin is actually 1mm smaller. Ball is quite a bit larger......
