Default Idle speed starts low and increases until warm

My early car starts at a low idle when cold then it continues going up until it is warm. This has forced me to set the idle screw so that I idle at about 700rpm immediately after start, up to about 1900rpm when warm! Does anyone know how idle is regulated on the early cars so that I can get it idling in a reasonable range?

sounds like youve got a leak, or your idle valve is shot.

cold idle should be ~800, or 600 if really cold out, and warm should be 900-1000

What about the DME temp sensor? I know that regulates the EFI for cold starts. Try unplugging it and seeing if it acts any differently (easy variable to eliminate).

What do you mean by idle valve? There is no ICV on early cars.

I was thinking it might be the temp sensor, I hadn't thought of just pulling the plug to see what happens.

Well, the DME temp sensor ohms out okay when cold, so I doubt that is the issue. I will test it warm tomorrow just to make sure, but I think I'm still going to be searching. What else does the DME use to control the idle on the early cars?

"auxiliary air valve" which does largely the same thing as the late ICV
