Default AL Torque Tube: Review after some hard driving

Well as some of you have followed Dave951M ( Dave Miller ) put together an AL torque tube of the 944 series of cars not to long ago. It has been under testing in my car for a bit of time yet and I just wanted to give an updated review of the product.

After weeks of street driving, and a couple of long road trips there have been no issues with the tube. The tube went up to VIR with me this last weekend for 1 day of abuse on the track and again held up as expected with out any issues.

My only orginal concern was with the lack of exhuast hangers, but after fixing my motor moutns that has not been a problem either, no rattles (other than my from my hatch), everything has been working great.

And for those that missed my original product review, the fit and finish of the tube is top notch, the welds are perfect and the bearings are all safety wired in place for add security. Dave did his homework on this one those who were waiting for the initial test can now contact him. I give it the thumbs up for initial testing....

I have no association with dave's attempts to make the tube, other than knowing him through rennlist and our 951's......

Ian - any idea of the weight differential and pricing? That OEM part is a heavy beast!

Weight difference is on the order of 24lbs. That's over 30% lighter, easily rebuildable, and yes, I have a solution to the muffler hanger thing. Email me directly for pricing and other info. We're looking into other models aside from the 944/51.

Ian,
Is Dave still planning to make these for interested parties? I'm definitely interested in this, and would like to include it in my stock pile of parts.
Thanks.

As I was wrestling the TT away to remove the clutch housing, I was thinking "why didn't Porsche make this thing out of alloy", like so many other pieces on our cars. I wonder if it had something to do with crash testing? Also aluminum has a tendency to be grow and shrink with temperature changes, so I wonder if that was a factor as well? Or maybe just the cost?
