What's normal at start up?
Since I have no other cars to compare to what is normal when you start the car in the morning? In other words do the RPMs start higher right when the car is started up and then just slowly drop down to the warmed up RPM speed?

That's true of most cars, these included because the engine runs richer (either because of a choke or in the case of the 944, a DME temp switch in the front of the engine).

Thing is my car doesn't rev up at all, it just tries to idle at 950.
I've changed my ICV, but I've got on order a TPS as well. What else should I look at.
My car has a Vitesse chip and 3" exhaust but is otherwise stock.

If you didn't jumper your diagnostic cable wire before setting your idle speed, your icv may be maxed out and cannot raise the speed any more. You can verify this by turning on the air conditioning if you have it. If the idle doesn't raise, the icv is maxed. I would suggest going through the idle speed adjustment procedure, which should fix the problem.
Use the clarks procedure, but set the idle to around 850, which is euro spec and offers more refinement.

More important is how does it start and idle? My 951 use to have horrible idle hunting and almost stalling. It has been a couple of months since I have been in my S2 to say what the start up idle is however it is defiantly higher when cold.
Newer cars this is less obvious due to the extra sensors and what not that take control for emissions when cold

When I first start my car the idle fluctuates between 1000 and 1100rpm and smells super rich (I have no cat, so that could be causing extra smells). It also likes to "skip" every couple seconds as if the spark was being cut then restarted again, but it never stalls. On really cold mornings there is some white smoke that goes away when it warms up. There seems to be a bit of excess vibration too , but that could just be my shot motor mounts. The injector clicking is loud as hell too. Once it warms up it idle as ~900rpm and none of these abnormalities are present, except for the loud injector clicking.
After tons of work to get the engine in tip top shape this is how the car behaves, so I'm assuming this is how 944's are supposed to be.

I don't think when new these car made any weird sounds, vibrations or anything else for that matter. These were expensive cars and people expected them to work right. No one would have bought the car if they "skipped" or "missed" or what ever. That's my opinion at least.
