the 944S is a car that is begging to be built up...william is right, they *are* faster than a normal 8v, but they certainly dont *feel* any faster...and as far as daily driving is concerned, they are useless until 4000+rpm.

as always, it needs more cubes or "breathing assistance" to make it work.

944S and 944s2 and 944na 84-91 all have cast rods, the 944na in 83 had rarst forged rods, turbos from 86-88 all used forged rods, some 89 951's came with cast rods probably a very small percentage.

I assume that the 944 rods are crank-centered, not pin-centered, correct?

Ah thank you Lart, I will commit that to memory! What are the 968 rods?

968 rods are also cast just like the 944S2 only the turbo had forged, although I found one 90 S2 with forged rods but I don't know if they were installed from factory or the PO did it

Ideola:

I believe that Pauter also makes a shorter rod for "stroker" motors so you can use the stock piston.

If you decide to go the 16v route and are looking for a 2.5 head pm me as i've got 2, one fully assembled new guides/etc/redone.

I'd rather stay with stock rod, or slightly longer rod to reduce angularity and top end power. Custom pistons are about half the cost of custom rods, so I'd rather make the changes there.

Send me a PM with details and asking price on the heads that you have...I may be interested.

All 944/968 engines used the same length rod. The "stroker" pistons are available, if you are using the 88mm (3.0L) crankshaft in a 2.5 block the piston pin is moved up 4.5mm to accomodate.
