Ok - so I manned up and pulled the radiator. The piece on the top was rolling around inside and the one on the bottom was the what was left of the fitting.
There's about 2/3 of the threading still in the radiator, so tapping isn't going to help.
Looks like my options are
New radiator
Put in a new fitting + jb weld and get it tested at the local radiator shop
Any other options?
It really looks like you've got most of it out! Needle nose pliers or a small chisel to get the last chunk out?
I've got a box of 944 hoses I bring to every 944fest, someday I'll save somebody's weekend. This year I added this nipple to the package.
What I meant was - the fitting threads are all cleared out, but some of the thread INSIDE the radiator is missing - maybe 1/3 of the cylinder is broken off and that's the top part of the picture.
With a new fitting, failed a radiator leak test with a hairline crack below the overflow fitting.
Date code on this radiator is 7/91 so 30 years of service.
The interior threader IS plastic, so if the broken part doesn't come out easily, pull the radiator. You'll probably end up doing that anyway to replace or leak test. It was easier than I thought it would be.
Thanks for the helpful thoughts!

I did not take the radiator to shop to pressure test it. One step I did not include is to sand the radiator surface and the brass nipple to improve adhesion. The key is to build up the JB Weld in layers with sufficient curing time between applications. My fix has lasted 3 years in racing environment.
Final resolution - replaced the radiator with an OEM (plus most of the hoses and the 2 thermostats) and it's running great. Also cleaned the intercooler.

I once broke this piece.. broken part came out fine.. and to my surprise, an old similar piece from a '94 Volvo 850 I had fit perfectly and has been in there ever since.
I wonder how many rads have a similar part to sub in..
