Angry AC switch failure!HELP!!!

I have an 86' 944 na, and my air conditioning switch broke. The electronics are just fine, it is the little black cap with the springs that broke. I went to Parts heavens (parts store) and they told my i couldn't replace the single switch, i had to replace the entire instrument panel which would cost $175 dollars used. I was wondering if any body could offer a cheaper solution. Also on something totally unrelated could any one give me a run down or some advice on how to change the thermo-switch. Thank you all for your help.

search the list for 'snowflake' (here and the 951 list) and you'll find lots of info - including how to replace just the switch - as long as you know how to solder!
i've done it on my previous 86 and its pretty easy.

As for the thermo switch, it takes a 30mm socket. I had to loosen the radiator fan assembly to get mine out but didn't remove them from the car. Remember to let some of the coolant drain out before removing it if you don't want a mess and also remember to bleed the system after all is done.
