HELP!! do you need to take everything apart to change a SUNROOF GEAR??
SUNROOF went SNAP tonight! Looks like the sunroof gear stripped tonight. The arms still extend out of the car to engage the roof panel, but it does not go up anymore.
Anyone know of a write up to repair this roof mechanism? Luckily I bought a spare gear last year. Unfortunately, I think it just went out on both P-cars this week!
UPDATE
Just looked over the procedure in PET and read the post on Clark's garage. Looks like the gear on the passenger side is stripped in my car - do I really need to take apart all the motor assembly etc just to change the gear thats in the headliner?

You have a spare gear? That means it can't be the gear that's the problem.
The rule says parts you have spares for will never ever break.
Or maybe you've lost the gear, and just don't know it yet.

it's happened to me three times in three years :/ i think the sunroof my car has isn't the one it had stock. if i look very closely there's a very slight difference in the coloration of the sunroof as opposed to the rest of the car... maybe a tree fell on it in times past. In any case, for whatever reason it's been a real annoyance, but i'll be damned if i'm not popping the top on a nice summer day, always seems to be worth the risk.

from Paragon's web site:
http://www.paragon-products.com/ just search "sunroof gear"
item# PP944.564.430.01 price: $4.25
Tired of that sunroof not doing what you tell it to? Try replacing the plastic drive gears. Two per car. Fits all 944 models from 1985.5 on.

Nope.
I like the write-ups on those sites, but they leave out a few "Tips".
Here is what I do when replacing gears.
1. Remove roof
2. Then take headliner off
3. Remove box covers for gears
4. Pull gears AND arms out (both, regardless if only one is stripped)
5. Now, with the roof still out - hold your finger over the microswitch between the sunvisors (car will think the roof is in) and put the key in position #1 and "lock" the roof. You should be able to see the spline cable moving where the gears go. The cable should stop at some point (when you "lock" the roof). The cable is now set with the motor.
6. Now, re-install the gears and re-install the arms, but make sure that about 2-2.5 "teeth" are exposed on the arms - remember, they are going to be in the "locked" position, so picture the arms being exposed a bit.
7. Stick you finger back over the microswitch and move the arms up and down (position #2 in the ignition), like you are raising and closing the roof.
8. With the finger still on the switch - move back to position #1 in the ignition and put the roof in "remove roof" postion (arms fully retracted).
9. Re-install roof.
10. Try it all out. If the roof closes too "open", then the arms were installed too far out, if the arms are too far in - the roof won't catch and you will be able to lift it out. Either re-do the arms or do the adjustment on the top microswitch on the motor assembly (much easier than taking everything apart again).

I have a problem with my sunroof. It seems that it works just fine until I try to remove the roof. With the key in position 1 it will not retract the arms. Any ideas???

Thanks for the detailed write up - great explanation. I can visualize the procedure without even taking it apart!!
Should have asked you for help when we were trying to figure out how to remove the shift rod plastic tube than runs through the bellhousing / transaxle when we changed a clutch! (hint: you have to relieve the dimples at one end of the tube to slide it out of the way)

Travis, love that avatar - cracks me up every time I see it... did you ever sell that moped?? Loved that listing - would have bought it, but the shipping to the west coast would have been a killer.
