Heater fan noise.

I had the same thing. I can't find any guides, but I think it has to come out from the bottom, which means a full dash removal. I got a can of silicone spray lubricant and sprayed it down through the grate under the hood while it was running and the noise went away. It still runs anemically, but at least it's quieter. If you find a how-to on removing the early blower unit please post it, it would be helpful.

I believe the blower motor and fan can be accessed under the hood, between the firewall and windshield. There may be a plastic cowl over it.
My 87 944S developed a squeak in the blower motor a few years after purchase. I tried three different lubes. The third time was the charm: I used Bosch's distributor lube on the disassembled turning parts and it has been quiet since then. This is a very thick lube. I would disassemble, clean, apply a smear of a heavy lubricant.

on the 87 I had, the blower motor was above the firewall under the hood - it's inside a box, but you can grease the bearings. the little temp sensing motor that is under the dash also squeaks and it's hard to localize.
