Default no 2nd or reverse

84 944 n/a 5 speed

The bolt somehow fell out of the mounting thing and shifting was sloppy no gear selection available. Put in a different bolt and have all but 2nd and reverse. Is there a specific way to set the shifter? Cuz I think the neutral area of shifter is too far back so I'm not able to fully shift into 2nd or reverse since the boarder is oval.

Anyone experience this before? Is there a specific way to set the shifter before installing the mounting bracket?

in my experience the bolt goes against the flat, so you have the aluminum coupler installed upside down

Really? I can't imagine how it would've gotten turn around, it worked fine before. What about the smaller hole?

So how should it be?

Also just lost 4th as well. Need to kno if there's a way to set it.

I thought that the couple was upside down also, but after looking at the shifter on only944, it looks as though that is correct (I can't remember how I installed it- it's been a few months now)

Since you're problem is all gears on the down side, it seems that your problem is likely the 13/17mm bolt connection at the top of the shift linkage at the transmission. I would be willing to bet that it came loose and the neutral position was shifted off center (that might make it feel as though the neutral position is too far back to engage the down gears, as you say). If you get under the car and reset the neutral position using that connection, I would bet that your problem will be fixed. Have someone in the car hold the actual stick centered while you tighten the bolt back up so it doesn't move off-center again.

the steel bracket that is shown on the left side of your photo that goes to the top of the trans could be cracked - it happened to me, and then the car just doesn't shift right at all.

Turns out the bolt was the issue. It was a tapered bolt and the replacement I purchased wasn't tapered. I luckily had a spare transmission with the assmbly so I took the bolt out of that and put in my currently installed tranny and now it shifts smooth as butter. Thanks guys for your help.

The tapered bolt goes into a recess in the round side of the cross shaft. The lever in your photo (into which the bolt threads) is not the factory part, perhaps it's somebodies' short shift kit. At a minimum, use thread locker on the bolt. For extra points, safety wire it.

Seriously, it fell out again? What did you torque it to? I use "gutentight" plus loctite. I've had luck taking a regular bolt and either machining it, or if you dont have that resource I've also had luck cutting the taper by hand with a grinder if you are very careful and good at that sort of thing.

the bolt should be safety wired. Get the original parts and put it back like it's supposed to be

Try PartsHeaven, Hayward CA - they can just ship one out to you. It will be a used one but it will be the correct one. It will be in decent, if not excellent shape.
