$225!!!!
If you can, cancel the order. You can get a much better price from Paragon.
If your car doesn't have FORD, CHEVY, or DODGE in the name don't shop at Auto Zone. Yes, they can order stuff but you'll likely get off-brand garbage at dealership prices.
I'm new to the 944 game as well but have a lot of experience with other German cars. Your engine rattle is probably a lifter. It's a sign that your car probably has over 100k miles. The steering wheel shimmy (if it's not just an imbalanced wheel) is another sign. It seems that tie rods last 100-125k miles max on Porsche/Audi/VW cars from the 80's.
Finally, follow the advice of everyone here and do those timing belts. It's an expensive job but is cheap insurance compared to a rebuild. I'm doing mine as soon as the car gets back from the body shop. (PO tried off-roading and smashed the front spoiler!)

Go to a good book store and look for a copy of Excellence magazine and buy it. There you will find among the advertisers all the sources of parts, alternatively join Porsche Club of America and use the Panorama ads.

I always press mine whilst in motion and it works ok.

Honestly, most questions about "my odometer doesn't work" include "it all started after I hit the trip reset while moving".
Knock on wood, throw salt and stop doing that. If I see your name on an invoice for a new gear I will be forced to do something strange to you involving peanut butter, a pint glass and 50 pennies.
Cheers!
