Timing Belt Tensioners for Early Cars?

Just changed out Porschelump's--uuurrrgghhh.
I did see that the 87+ cars got a sweet tensioner built in to maintain that once it's put on. Has anyone ever fit one of those onto an early car? Or are the belts so not-an-issue once they're installed that no one's ever bothered?
Really hate the "service position" for tinkering back there. Really, really.

Having done belt jobs on a few dozen 944s, I will say I am a bigger fan of the early tensioner and not the late one.
The late one is just extra complication during the belt job that is really unnecessary - it's just in the way. The spring tensioner doesn't really hold its position any better than the early locknut style, they are known to come loose sometimes. I have even seen a number of cars where previous mechanics have removed the spring altogether and made it a swingarm tensioner relying on the locknut.
It is possible for the late tensioner to be put onto an early block, requires modification to the block but...IMO, not worth it.
