Default bumper shock

Someone banged into one side of the rear bumper and pushed it in about an inch.
Wondering if the bumper shock is gas filled or actually collapses and has to be replaced.
Any info on that?

You can pull them back out but they are done as a shock once hit, they won't offer any protection in another bump.

In the event that the other side gets banged, you can join the snub-nose set!

Get a new one, that shock saved you a lot of heartache!

you can pull them back out - I use a 10 ton press. As others pointed out, they are less effective, but they aren't actually "ineffective" - and if you buy used ones, there really is no way to tell if they have been collapsed and pulled back out.
