Unhappy 944 (out of order)

Bad news. Looks like the 944 is out of order (maybee for good). Today on my way to work I hit a huge pothole. This thing ate my car and the back tire. I didn't think the damage was too bad until I got out of the car during work to check the damage. Well, I'm not a great person when it comes down to pointing things out. Seems my undertray was out which caused the fan belt (the belt right next to the waterpump, and timing belts ) maybee to to crack. I tried driving the car, but the steering is way to heavy. Seems like the power steering is shot as well.

Does this seem like a expensive fix? And what do you guys think is wrong? If the repair costs are to much I might as well lose the car and part it.

Not sure about the damage (maybe just a belt?). But if it was a public road you should be able to file a claim for the damage and get reimbursed, at least thats the way it works around here. Would hate to see a good 944 out of commission!

Something to look into!

By fan belt do you mean power steering belt? The power steering belt is the one closest to the radiator and that would explain the hard steering. If the timing belt broke, you wouldn't be able to drive the car at all. A replacement power steering belt should cost a few dollars and be a 10 minute install.

To keep you from having to replace the power steering belt though, I'll be generous enough to take the car off your hands for $500.

The car turns on perfectly. Runs. Just the steering is heavy and the battery light is on.

Your right. It may be the power steering belt.

But the two bottom pulley systems the belt were running on are completely cracked off something. It is also leaking some oil.

Hmm, battery light on? I bet you messed up the alternator/AC belt too. But if you cracked off BOTH the pulleys the power steering belt is on, that means you hit the power steering pulley off the crank that could be REALLY BAD. Do you still have oil pressure at pre-pothole levels?

I don't have my car anymore so I can't run out and look but, aren't both p/s and alternator belt tension rods attached to the same bracket?
If so, you may have broken that. Look under the car and see if the two goldish colored rods are swinging in the breeze.

Is the oil leak new, if so where is it coming from? You should see two belts in the front of your engine, the one closer to the engine drives the alternator and the ac compressor and the other one drives the power steering pump. Replace the broken belt(s) and then start the car to see if the pullies wobble and to see if you have any oil pressure.

I agree... it could be the pulley. This happened to me a while back... although I did not hit pothole, the pulley just came loose (it had not been tightened properly). The power steering felt very heavy, and the alternator light came on.

Bad, bad, bad if it's loose... but the good news is that it could be a fast an easy fix.

If it is the pulley, do not drive the car (not even a foot). Most stuff could (and will) work loose, including the timing belts, etc.

I picked up the car today and took it to my mechanic, so I should know the exact details tommorow.

All I know is the oil leak is new. It's coming from the same broken part. The pressure for the oil seems fine. Visually all I see are the pulleys, and the belt being broken. I'm hoping this is a cheap fix. The reason 944's suck are their dog's of cars, but so expensive to fix. I wouldn't mind paying for 951 repairs, but 944 repairs seem like a bad investment.
