Default Oil pickup line

Last thursday I finally gave in and took my car into the shop for the delayed oil pressure. Today I got the call that they believe a broken oil line is the culprit. The shop said that it is a common problem on 944's and that the oil pressure delay was due to the oil pump having to build up enough pressure to overcome the broken oil line. I plan on doing this myself along with the motor mounts, rod bearings, and of course the oil pan gasket.

-How long should it take for the shop or for me to complete this job?
-Does the broken oil line sound like a probable culprit?
-Would the oil line be easy to get to once I get the front suspension and the oil pan out of the way or will it be much easier to repair it with the engine out of the car?

As always, thanks in advance.

I would have thought with a broken oil line there'd be no oil pressure at all.
Were't they more specific about the whereabouts of this oil line and if they found it - why not fix it??
Seems strange to me.

I'm guessing that the oil line would be the oil pick-up line that picks the oil up out of the oil pan. They don't know if it is broken for sure since they didn't remove the front suspension and didn't drop the oil pan.

Now I'm curious, when I start mine, the oil press warning light stays on for about 15 sec, BUT the engine is NOT starved for oil, I know the sound of a dry engine. What is it that lead you to belive you have a delay in oil pressure?

The easy (yet messy) check to see if the oil pump is providing pressure is to crank the car with the oil filter removed. (Pull the DME relay so it won't start)

After 2 seconds of cranking, you should have a pretty good oil flow. If not, you have a problem with the pump losing prime, or not being able to draw oil into it.

Maybe you could tie a clear bag around the oil filter housing while you crank it so it'll be less messy? Just a thought...

It takes roughly 15 seconds for my oil pressure guage to register and for the oil light to go off. After these 15 seconds, the engine sounds smoother and a lot better.

I picked up the car from the mechanic today and plan on removing the oil filter to test the oil delivery tommorrow. Thanks Perry for the idea of removing the DME relay and SM for the idea of the plastic bag, as I did not think of these.
