I'd say the car you looked at is worth $1k max. Scrap value would be about $250.

At whatever cost you get it for, it will take $10,000 of work to make it worth $5,000.

did they make this guy a lifetime member yet?

Even if you could get it for $1k, there are only 24 hours in a day. Most here would probably agree that driving is much more preferable to wrenching....

So this morning I get an email from the seller asking me w his car needs to pass NC state inspection. I took a moment to thank him for turning down my offer as the consensus both here and 944online is that his car isn't worth more than 1000. I did point out a few items he would need to replace to get it to pass inspection.
Sometimes it's good to step back and get an objective opinion. I am glad I posted about this here. Had anybody told me it was worth his asking price I might have found myself with what amounts to a running parts car.

I'm sure he was getting a lot of calls....from people who hadn't seen the car.

For that kind of money I got an 86 951, with the engine and transmission removed. The engine was an 89 951S engine with 40,000 original miles. The interior was in perfect condition, leather seats, crack free dash, working odometer at 141,000 miles. Transmission had recently been rebuilt, has a new limited slip diff installed...911 twist wheels with newer tires, beautiful body with only a couple small dings and very nice original paint. Brakes and clutch are also new(er). Without going over 3400 bucks I was able to buy a very low miles used torque tube that was in better condition than the one in the car, as well as belts, rollers, a full engine reseal kit, vacuum lines, oil pressure sending unit and a TON of other random crap...I put the engine in, started it up, tagged it, and have put several thousand miles on it since with only a few silly problems that I missed the first time around (like fuel hoses).

I have the resources and mechanical ability to do projects like that though...someone looking for a driveable car and not having the skills and resources (tools, location etc) would expect to spend a lot more!

You, sir, are a lucky bastard. I say that in the most jealous way possible.

I appreciate your jealousy

It also came with ground control coilovers with camber/castor plates in the front and adjustable koni's in the rear, a superlight flywheel and a KEP stage 1 pressure plate, with a 930 clutch...aaaaaaand chips, a test pipe, a new cat-back Ansa exhaust (which isn't that great but it's good enough for me...for now) and a manual boost controller, and a strut tower brace, and a harness bar...i'm sure I'll think of other stuff LOL.

Like you said, I'm a lucky bastard...but as many issues as I have had with vehicles in the past, it was time for a deal to fall in my lap

Well it looks like the car has now been relisted. Using the same old photos from almost 2 yrs ago with the exact same description. But he now has lowered the price to $2000. Believe me, this car does not look like the photo. And it is not a "bit faded", it is alot faded. Why he still claims it has 194k miles and 5k on the belts when the odometer broke at 196k is baffling. No mention of the gas odor when driving?

See for yourself. I doubt any of the things I pointed out in the first post of this thread have been fixed.

Have you considered Cyclone's turbo? I think he is asking $3500 now and Virginia Beach isn't too terribly far from you.

I am not in the market at the moment. I decided not to borrow money to purchase my second 944. (I already have a white 86 n/a.) So before I seriously begin looking for another I need to first sell my 1966 Galaxie 500 that is taking up space in my driveway and use the funds from that sale towards another 944. That wont be anytime soon.
When this red 944 first was relisted last Sept I was willing to borrow funds at that time thinking that since he dropped his price from $5500 to $3500 that it was worth a look in case it was in "great shape" like he claimed. But as I discovered it isnt worth that and I dont want that car as it needs too much work to get it in the shape I would want it to be in.

Well its back......again.

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/4715579236.html

It reappeared a month or so ago listed at $4995. After awhile it was dropped to $3995. Now its $5995. I dont know what changed condition-wise that made the seller jack the price up to $6k. I emailed and asked a few questions about things that were wrong with it last Fall, like the non working AC. He claims it does work. Something doesnt smell right though. I was exchanging emails with an "Allen". But this newest ad says to contact "Arthur". Yet the photos are the same as last months ad.
