Default Timing belts question

A friend of mine is replacing his timing belts on his 1987 944S. He ordered the proper two belts (using numbers given to him when he called the local Porsche dealer and gave the VIN). These part numbers matched those shown on the Porsche website catalogue.
The two belts were the "Timing belt - Cambelt" 944 105 157 04 and the "Balance shaft belt 944 102 219 04.
Problem is that when the new parts came in (both made by Continental) they were sized slightly different from the old ones.
The new Cambelt was slightly thinner in width than the old (side to side) and was a little shorter when stretched out together.
The balance shaft belt was slightly thicker in width. Same length.
What does this mean? Have the belt dimensions been changed over the years? Or maybe the previous owner put the wrong belts on? Has the old Cambelt stretched over time and so installing the slightly shorter new belt will work?
Any advice would be most helpful.

return them and buy Gates belts from Autohaus AZ, Zims, Paragon or German.

You were given the 944NA part number, the 16v cars use a different timing belt. The proper part number is
944-105-323-02. The balance belt is the same and you can use what you got.

The updated balance belt is wider. See post:
