Unhappy Tipping your P-Car Mechanic?

When I took my previous 944 to my mechanic, I thought he was the owner/manager of the shop, so whenever I wrote out a check for $1,500 for a repair, I never tipped him. Turns out, he has a boss, and is just a mechanic that works there sometimes (builds track cars other times).

Should I be mortified that I haven't tipped the guy? What do you guys do?

Tip your mechanic?!! That is a new one on me. Who are we supposed to tip next, our doctors because they didn't kill us on the checkup?

I guess I am use to giving out tips when I take the Taurus to STS to get a tire rotation done. The kid that does the rotation gets $5...you know?

I used to get tips when I worked in the garage at the tire shop...I used to get tips up to $20 depending on who it was. Everytime I saw the gold Jag come into the parking lot I ALWAYS helped him out.

A lot of times when we do flat repairs, I will just tell the customer to not worry about paying for it then they will be all excited and go tip the guys in the shop. Makes them happy.

Christ, I've never heard of tipping the mechanic. When you get a quick flat repaired, I can definately understand that kind of thing, but the reason my mechanic is my mechanic is because he does a good job...Otherwise someone else would be getting my $85/hr (which, as it stands, anyone rarely does)...

Andy:
For my yearly winter "planned" maintenance/upgrades, I usually tip my mechanic around $30.00. He always says that it's not necessary, and that I'm not that rich to be doing that, but then I just tell him to take his wife out for dinner and call it a day.

I never have problems with my shop, BTW...

My mechanic gets plenty from me, i dont need to tip! Seriously though, I pay rounded off figures, so if it likes $237.50 or something, i just give $250 and we are straight. It shows your appreciation for their work I think, especially if they are good. Just think what you would do if you couldnt keep your pride and joying running right and couldnt trust a local guy?

you don't need to be tipping your mechanic if he works flat rate.

you take your car in for a steering rack. he quotes you 4 hours book time (that's how long the labor guide says it should take to do.), but he's done it so many time that he knocks it out in 2.5 hours. you still pay for 4 hours.

he's being tipped plenty, trust me.

I used to get beer from the racers when I was done with there cars. I got even more after they had a good weekend! Most of the regular guys didn't tip and I didn't mind it.

I couldn't tip Chris Prack if I tried - let alone Ivan. Those guys are strong - they'd just stand straight up - no tipping at all. Now if I came in with a 30-pack, I bet they'd tip. Eventually....

(the guys at IMA are the best...)
