Default Help please Newbie buying a 944

Hello Forum,

I'm thinking of taking the plunge into Porsche ownership and looking at a 944 or 968 (if I can stretch to it). Based in Canada (Whitby) have a couple of cars in mind from Kijiji and Autotrader. Would like buying advice from people who own and run these cars.

Thanks in anticipation

Chris

The problem with giving advice on a used 944 or 968 is understanding your level of mechanical ability and prior cars owned. If you need to use a repair shop to change the belt or do repairs, the 944 or 951 is not the car to buy.

You have mentioned the 968 would be a stretch but the car would probably need less in current and future repair.

Buying any used 944 or the 951 turbo is a gamble and a very costly project. Usually expecting to spend an additional $3K to $5K in parts and repair the first year in addition to the cost of the car.

The other problem is the lack of available 944/951/968 cars in Canada to choose from.

Buy a 968.

Piece of advice -- don't buy one in a hurry. Let it marinade... wait for it... but be ready to pull the trigger when you find "the one". And don't settle on anything mechanical, or accident history... Sure, you might have to get gray over tan instead of gray over black... but where it matters, don't settle.

Oh, and don't buy red over tan for the love of everything holy. They're everywhere.

suggest you get 85.5 or later, preferably 87 or later to get the mechanical improvements, and download the factory service manual and READ IT from cover to cover so you know what you are looking at.

I'm pretty local to you.
I'm doing a Cars and Coffee meet this Sat Oct 5. Bakers dozen Ritson/Taunton 9am. Come on over. I'll have my 944 with me. The meet is based around Datsun Z cars, but all are welcome. It is a small group and not everyone brings out their cars this time of year, but like I said. I'll be there in the P car.

I had a 1970 240Z and 3 944's and it just hit me as to how similar in concept they both are. Do your "due diligence" and read as much as you can and review the posts on this site to see some of the common issues you'll be facing with one of these cars. If you have good mechanical skills and don't mind the ongoing list of things that will invaribly pop up, you'll enjoy the 944. There's a wealth of technical support here to help you deal with the mystery stuff that occasionaly occurs. Good luck in your search.

Thanks guys, I'm trying to find as late a car as possible with as few klicks on it. Have a cab to look at this weekend. It is red though! (Not my favourite colour) low kms and seems to have had quite a lot of work done to it. Regards my mechanical ability I'm reasonably handy and will attempt most things (used to rally back in the UK and rebuilt a few cars). ZR8ED I will try and make it (I have a date with my kids at Home Depot to make rockets in the morning!!!) Do you have a cell or email and I will see if you are still there when I finish. Cheers Chris
