Dream car? It's a brand new Lotus Esprit Twin Turbo(silver) But that's a few years away being 80 grand. I'm looking for a fun kinda daily driver. I need it the rest of the summer for work, and then i'll be a school for a year. Going the classis car route doesn't seem like the best way to me. I'd love to drive a GTO around, but i don't see it happening.
I don't just want to lay rubber. If i wanted that i would have never bought the 944 in the first place. And i get my speed thrills on my Suzuki RF900(motorcycle) 120hp, 400lbs. You do the math... But i do want a faster car than my 944....

The merits of the individual cars not withstanding I am very impressed with this board. I'm pretty new to it and to my '87 944NA and I expected you guys to jump all over someone who would propose comparing your cars to a Vette. Mostly the responses were considerate and well advised. Obviously you guys mostly know your cars, I guess we all do to different degrees or we wouldn't be here. I agree that these are two very differnet cars and really for different purposes. And yes, some of the old Vettes were really rattletraps. But hey, it's the differences that make cars such a grerat hobby. Speaking for myself, I can't stand the snobs that think the only car worth discussing is their car, whatever it is - 911, Ferrari, Vette, etc. God save us from those guys.

I'm with Tabor, you CAN get a really nice 951 for $11-13k. This gives you the speed and the grace. The 951 also gives you room to grow, stock they are mighty impressive, probably about on par with the 85 Vette. I bought my 951 just over a year ago for $9k, I have spent about another $6k in goodies. The performance of my 15 year old car is now right there with a new Z06 Vette, not bad for 15k. That Vette sounds nice, is it an automatic? please tell us it is a stick. I personally would begin the search for a 951, the nose will grow on you.

Of course its a stick. I wouldn't be considering it if it wasn't! The owner actually took the old 4 speed out and put a six speed in. He also did some minor mods that bring it up to 300hp. And the stock torque is 330! It's supposed to do 0-60 in 5.6. I've been looking around for a good 951, but i haven't seen one that i really like. I'll keep the search up, i'm not commiting either way yet. But the vette just seems like too good a deal to pass up right now.

Cool

Ken,
Check out E-bay. There is a highly modified and 'appears' to be well taken care of 951 for auction 'no reserve' currently going to $11.3k or so. Also, check some of the internet pages on Porsche sales. There are at least 5-6 different web pages that are porsche specific. That's how I found my 944 S2. Hell, there's even a relatively low mileage 968 for sale on our classifieds for under $16k. If you really want a 951 then look for a little while. But, it sounds like to me that you want the Vette. I know we take the Porsche thing seriously on this board but come on...it's a car. If you like the Vette and want to try it go ahead. Your are young you've got plenty of time to own several Porsches through out your life.
Now I've done it. I swore I wasn't going to get involved in this thread. It is just silly.

MadMax is totally correct. Don't take it too seriously. Try for several nice performance cars over your lifetime...it will be worth every penny

Ken, talk to your insurance agent before you decide. S/He will be happy to let you know what they'd charge you to insure a 'Vette. You may decide the Porsche is a better bet after all.

~cheers~

I'm going to have to agree with Thaddeus on the insurance thing, I am looking to get a new car and insurance can definitly be a factor. If they are both close in rates, well then I have nothing to say.

The "classic" policies offered by JC Taylor, Grundy, Haggerty etc. apply to Corvettes over ten years old (i think) 25 years old for other cars, not sure about how old a Porsche has to be.

The insurance co's consider the Vette to be a "classic" because of its rarity, but my '90 RX-7 convertible (with 35k) which had a production run of 22,200 over 5 years, and is not a classic until it reaches 25.

Go Figya!

To my surpise, the cost to insurance the 944 and the vette is exactly the same! (with my insurance co)

I think that i will at least give the vette a shot. It's not going to depriciate too much in value over a year or two as long as i keep it in good condition. And it will require less money to maintain than my old 944(hopefully). And i think the piece of advice to try out as many sports cars as possible is a good one. It's not like i'm stuck with it forever if i get tired of it!
