Different VIN on window and engine compartment
Okay, so here is the situation. My window VIN has a North American VIN AA2 (I live in Canada), however, the VIN inside my engine compartment (near battery) is clearly a ROW (rest of the world) VIN with the ZZZ and a different serial number.
Anyone else noticed this on theirs? Is it a scenario where the North American cars are revinned when they arive?

I think I've heard that one inside the engine bay referred to as the "preproduction" VIN... like the one they stamp on the body before the destination is set. The one on the A-pillar is the actual VIN after the car is configured. Sumthin like that anyway... your car doesn't have a personality disorder, they're all like that.

kinda like the chassis are mfg'd fo rthe whole world, but when the engines and exterior/bumpers/winsdcreen are installed then it becomes specific. you didn't notice that the numbers are still similar (suffixes).

Robert is right. My '88 951 is US. model and it is like Robert mentioned. However i used to have euro spec (ROW) '87 944 which did not have visible VIN number. Most of the cars here in europe still don't have them.If i can remeber correctly only Ford's have visible VIN's on euro models.

My 87 944S has the same sequential number on the official number (WPOAA. . .) as on the firewall build number (WPOZZZ. . .). If these numbers are totally different I think that should be a matter of concern to get documented as if you have to make a claim, the insurance company may use the discrepancy to try to reduce or escape payment.

Actually, I just rechecked and the serial portion are the same. There was a scratch on one of the numbers making the 5 look like a six.
At this point the only difference is
WPOAA0954GN15xxxx
WPOZZZ95ZGN15xxxx
So side question, is the serial number that I have unique to the 951 series (vs. shared across other 944 of the year?). If so, is it a fair statement that I can tell by the serial number a what point in the sequence of 951 for 86 mine was built (it is in the 5000's)?
