I am thinking about taking on a project it is an 87 944s with a broken exhaust cam. It's a clean break between the #3 lobes. Are broken cams a prob;em on older 944's or does this engine have serious underlying problems?

Sounds serious - its an interference design. Along with the broken cam, the head may be cracked, believe it or not. Also, 944S's are rare so expect to pay at least $1000 for decent head with ir without cams. In short...I would stay far away from that one. The 944S's are notorious for this problem and that's one of the reasons they are in such short supply now.
Every month or so, someone will write in with the exact or similar question that you posed. Its always the same answer - I wouldn't spend $1500 plus purchase price to get a 944S back together. Just buy a 951 that does not have the problem as the difference in performance is incredible.
