Mobil 1 observation ...
Thought I'd relay an interesting observation regarding Mobil 1 oil.
I run Redline 50 wt. Racing Oil in my 951 race car. During the winter months (i.e. storage) I drain the Redline and add Mobil 1 15w-50. The Redline Racing Oil does not have rust inhibitors or detergents thus it is not wise to store the vehicle for longish periods. This is the second consecutive year I've noticed the following:
Mobil 1 "LEAKS" the Redline doesn't. There is Mobil 1 all over the place!
Interesting: I started my car with the Mobil 1 in it and the valves where very "loud" (especially cylinder #3). Every time I started the car whether warm or cold the valves were uncommonly "loud". I replaced the Mobil 1 with Redline 50 wt. this am and started it up ... instantly noticed how much quieter my valvetrain was ...
Don't think I'll be using Mobil 1 ever again ....

where can you get Redline and how much is it? I've always understood that it was some of the best, but have always used Mobil 1 b/c I can get it at Wallmart for about $17/5QT bottle- it does leak pretty badly though...

Upon starup the valvetrain is a bit noisy for about a second until the oil pressure picks up. I noticed this the moment I switched to mobil 1. I dunno, I guess its ok stuff. I noticed the engine runs a bit smoother. No leaks though.

well, I do have a large oil pan leak now. but I think their was always a leak. I could see a puff or two from time to time, but I couldn't tell where the origin was. Now I know because it sits right ontop of the wastegate inlet pipe area. Could this still be a rear main seal? or is it the pan?

Luke, youre a good guy and I really appreciate your advice (the tranny man), but I really find your use of bold letters distracting. Had to say it. I dunno, I guess its annoying when trying to read other posts, talk to your girlfriend and come up with coherent sentences all at the same time. Anywho, dont feel you have to change to non-bold letters just cause of me. I'm just saying they are distracting.

Synthetics will always leak when dino oil didn't.I learned this the hard way on a totally regasketed Toyota .Replaced with dino oil -no more leaks. I wonder if it's a point of concern that it takes straight 50wt to quiet the valves .Thats what they had to run in older Harleys. (No offense meant)

The italics always confuse me. Italics are typically used when you quote someone.
Don't cry.

I've been researching (read surfing) this as well and according to the general wisdom and the Redline web site Mobil 1 is not only very thin it uses olfin base oils which dry out and shrink engine seals. Redline uses different base oils which actually swell the seals and they add a tiny bit of this olfin to balance this out. They also claim 10-18k mi oil change intervals unless you do mostly short trips (I assume you would change the filter more frequently). I'm going with the Redline 20w50 at 5k intervals here in NC, it costs $4.16 /qt **Correction $5.72/qt** locally . Any one know if I can get it shipped cheaper?

I can't find it locally Who ships it?
BTW; Never thought to ask PO what oil he had used (bought w/ 88k) I used dino oil the first couple changes, then switched to Mobil 1. No sign of leaks for 2 years, my car's getting the cam tower resealed now (along with a THOUSAND other things) as it had a trace of wetness, most likely unrelated
