Post 951 catalytic converter

I am facing the replacement of my catalytic converter and was curious to know if a larger converter (retro-fit) would offer additional performance. I am looking for better air flow if this does in fact offer increased power.... otherwise the stock replacement is the choice. Thanks!

Bob, I know next to nothing about cats but I would want to find out if having an oversized one would make it run too cool and muck up the works and make you fail emissions test. You would then be in the worst of both worlds - poorer performance than having a bypass and having to go buy and install the right cat to pass tests anyway.

Bob,

I talked to someone who is/was the 944 expert in Panorama. I think as of 2 months ago he is not doing it any more and the PCA is looking for someone to fill his spot. Anyway, he told me he welded up one from a 968 because it flowed even better. Cost him $150. I believe the factory 951 goes for $600-$700 new. I am not sure about the horsepower issue. I believe that the better flow helps the turbo to spool up quicker. From what I have read in various turbo books is that the best exhaust for a turbo is no exhaust. The turbo itself provides the backpressure the the motor needs. I unbolted the converter from my car and bolted in a test pipe for $189. My state sniffs emissions so I will have to bolt the cat back in. In either case i believe a free flow cat will help the turbo spin up sooner.

Try going to Random Tehcnology's website. I called them and they said they could fabricate any bolt-on catalytic converter as long as you can provide the specs and measurements. They quoted me about $250 for my 86' 951.

I've had rice burner imports and I've tried all sorts of cats...Random's seem to work the best and 50 state legal!

I have a Random Technologies converter on my 86 951 and my 78 280Z. I am very pleased with this converter on both cars. However, the one for my Porsche cost $500 as opposed to the $250 for the Z.
