Post Wheels and Tires for an 89 952

I have an 89 952 and I am considering purchasing the Mille Magila Cup 1 or Cup 2 wheels. Does anyone have pictures of these on a 944 Turbo? I am trying to duplicate the cup wheels from a 996, but am having a hard time finding any for less than big$$$. I have gound a set of twists from a 996, but I perfer the cup wheels. Also are these wheels a copy of the cup wheels. Here is a link http://www.tirerack.com/upgrade_gara...&autoYear=1989

I am looking at the 17 x 7.5 and 17" x 9 and have seen a few comments lately on trammeling. Are the 17's the way to go or stick with the 16" on the car now. A little extra traction of the 17's and the look itself wouldn't hurt my car.
Thanks

There are a couple things to think about as you weigh what you are going to do.

First off, the original offsets were different for the 952, and any other M030 optioned turbo. 65mm front and 60mm rear. Not too many people seem to realize this and think they are the same as the 951/944. So, you want to consider this in chosing your replacement offset given its wheel width.

Second, is upgrading the brakes in future. Big reds will require 17" wheels with the 13" rotor. And there are even bigger rotors, i.e. 14", that could be put on with some upgrades which will most likely require 18" wheels.

Of course there is the issue regarding if the car will take 18" wheels, Porsche keeps saying no and puts you down on a violation list if they ever see your car with 18" rims (avoid lawsuits should your suspension fall apart and kill someone), but many people are doing it with no ill effects.

Then there is the added weight of larger wheels and tires. Carving weight off the wheels takes big bucks. Finally with 18" wheels it is pretty easy to bust them up if you smack a big pothole or run over a curb.

From what I've heard from many posts etc...on this board is, the Mille Miglia wheels are VERY heavy. To answer your question, yes. The wheels that TireRack advertises (if you are asking about the Mille Miglias) are after-markter wheels. I don't know how much heavier, if any, they are than the factory wheels BUT from the way people talk about them I am GUESSING that they are heavier. You could find 968 17's with the correct offset and width. 968 17's are 65mm front and 60mm rear offset. They are also 7.5" width (front) and 9" width (rear). They should be just about perfect for your application. You could also check out Tom Pultz's website www.944S2.com

Click on his wheels on the picture of his car and you'll find some usefull info. Because, he is after all "the" authority on the 944S2 AND turbo.
Just kidding Tom, don't take yourself so seriously.

You will find some good info on his site.

Regards,

Dan has a point in his message. If your car has a m030 option you are not able to install Mille Miglia Cup clones.
I have a set of those clones in my '88 951.
Compering to original Porsche wheels here's few things you should consider:
1. quality is not even close to original ones.
2. They are MUCH heavier than original ones.

Cool

Thanks for all of the help. I purchased the takeoff Twist wheels in 7.5 x 17 and 9 x 17 today. Now I have to start getting some tires. I am leaning toward the Kumho's ecsta 712's.

Red face

What happens if you try to place a 53mm offset on a 952 that needs a 65mm offset?

Does it stick out further, not clear the calipers, or rub on the inside???

Front wheels sitting at 53mm offset will sit futher outside by 12mm (1/2"). They will be outside the front wheel well and probably hit the fender. Wider is better but to a point.

I hate to be a Turd here, but there is no such thing as a 952. Sure, the engine is a code 52. So what. The VIN decodes as a 951. We're doing a disservice to the folks who come here for legit info by telling them that there is such a thing as a 952. Yea, I know what you are talking about, and I own one, but it's a 951. Now that I've peed on the parade, I will commend you on your choice of take-off rims. They are built better than just about all of the aftermarket stuff. Plus they look Gooood!! (especially on a 951!!))

No 952? Blasphemy. Then next thing Dan will be telling us is that the 924's motor is shared with the AMC Pacer! Ewww!
