Question Intercooler upgrade

Following up on a prior post regarding intercooler temps, has anyone actually upgraded to a larger/modified intercooler, i.e. Kokeln or other? Were results achieved that justified the cost? (est $300 - $400). Does it even matter for a street driven only car?

Just wonderin'. Thanks in advance.

check out www.lindseyracing.com who offers two intercooler upgrades and dyno charts and inlet/outlet temps..
and www.speedforceracing.com which offers a huge spearco intercooler.

Hope this helps...

Sam,

I am considering the Lindsey intercooler. Does anyone have any real world experiences to relate?

I also had been considering the Lindsey IC, I also have been waiting for someone to post before/after dyno results. I do know of someone that did installed the lindsey IC w/out much of a gain. All I know is that if I sold a device for $300-$500 and
it made power I would prove it w/dyno charts
(I mean how long does it take to install a intercooler) Speedforce Racing is marketing a IC for $1500. If it would raise my RWHP from 330-350 as is expected. I'll probably go for it. But without dyno charts and some kind of proven track record. I'm holding on to my money. Paul

A guy at the track a few weekends ago had installed the Lindsey intercooler. He had not dynoed the car, but said that he found there to be a "noticeable difference" from the new IC, even in just street driving. I think it was Chris, from Austin. Not sure how to contact him, maybe he is reading this........

If he is reading this, maybe he can mention how much worse, if any, the lag is.

I have no experience with Porsche turbos, but I am a knowledgable member of the DSM community and I know that there are big gains for our cars when switching to an intercooler. I couldn't tell you how much, I haven't added a larger one to my car yet, but I'm sure it's at least 20 horsepower, depending on the mods your car already has. I think that's the most important part, because the 2g has a T-25 turbo that is WAY too small, so a lot of 2g-ers slap on a big ic and ask "where's my power?" That tiny turbo can't flow worth crap past 15 psi so there's not much the ic can do to help. A big ic, though, should lower intake temps quite a bit. I don't know about a 944, but on my Eclipse the ic piping gets HOT, especially on long drives, so I am going to wrap it with this stuff that is somewhat like exhaust wrap in reverse. Should help some, but anyways, if the ic is bigger, it should give you some kind of gain. The key is, for an intercooler to work, you have to be able to pass air through it, that means it must have air going in, and there must be room for the air to go out. I'm talking about the air that cools the air inside, flowing through the fins. If you have the back of the ic blocked, it's not going to work.

I think I've rambled on long enough...

Oh if anyone feels like answering, on a stock 951 or 951S, full boost comes on by what rpm? On my Eclipse it comes on by 2500, since the turbo is so small, but even on our monster 20Gs, boost is there by no later than 3500. These are like 500+ hp turbos, too. A lot of the people in the DSM community say that Mitsu turbos are the most efficient, modern design out, and we get pissy if our cars taken more than 3800 for full boost... I was just wondering what to expect when I get a 944 turbo...

My turbo is rated for low 400hp at 20psi and spools to max boost by 3000-3200 rpm. To do that though you need at the minimum a good replacement wastegate nad some type of boost control (LBE, boost controller, etc.). Cat bypass will also help.
