Post HELP! Power Steering Fluid types

I have no idea what kind of power steering fluid my 84 944na takes. Could you guys help me? I looked in the manual and it says to use ATF Dextron. I went to Auto Zone and asked them for an equivalent and they couldn't find one. What types are safe for use on my system? I was looking at Valvoline Synthetic Blend power steering fluid but I'm not adding anything to it until I get an answer from the board. There was also some Dexron 3 or something like that and it had Transmission/Power Steering fluid in it.??? What's that all about? Thanks guys.

I'm unclear here...are you filling an automatic tranny or a power steering system?

IF a tranny: I have no idea.

IF a PS system: I have strong opinions.

My 87 uses automatic tranny fluid for the PS. DON'T use synthetic! I did, and was very pleased by how much quieter the system was: the copious leaks it caused were not pleasing at all. I had to replace my PS rack as a result. Older seals don't like the smaller, slippier synthetic molecules.

I use Dexron III ATF in my PS, the stinky red dino stuff. Seems to work fine. Can't remember the brand. Something from the corner "convenience" store.

The transmission is manual. My PS was whining because it was low and probably drawing bubbles into the system. I just need to know something that is not going to tear it up.

Sorry, maybe I'm still being unclear. I am trying to fill the power steering reservoir up. I'm not sure about the transmission fluid though but I will take any suggestions on that as well. These two systems aren't combined or anything weird like that are they? Thanks.

Thaddeus,
Sorry to confuse you there... I didn't mean to mention anything about the "transmission fluid" in my original post. I must have had transmission on my mind as I was typing it. I edited it to read correctly. Thanks.

Tim, Yes, use regular old ATF. Dextron 3 should work fine. It superceedes the original Dextron to my knowledge.

You DO use Dextron Automatic Transmission fluid in your power steering system, DO NOT use power steering fluid.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the help. I went out and bought some Valvoline Dexron III and put it in. Should do the trick. It was in a red bottle and smelled funny just like Thaddeus had said. Thanks again.

Is that valveline D3 the same as ATF Dextron 3? Generic brand Dextron 3 has worked for me in my PS for several years.

True that most PSF IS ATF but not ALL the PSF is ATF. It's also cheeper to buy a quart of ATF than buy a pint of PSF.
