Question gear vs. tranny oil

I have never worked on any seriously mechanical (engine / tranny) part of my car (968)so forgive the lack of knowledge. But is changing the transmission fluid the same thing as changing the gear oil? I've had the shop change the tranny fluid in my car but never the gear oil which I will do if it is a seperate procedure. Thanks for the insight.

The gear oil goes in the rear differential (the big tube between the two back tubes). Get one of those Haynes do it yourself books and it should help. Use mobil 1 synthetic gear oil. It will be a little messy, but should be a breeze as long as you have the tools.

Our cars utilize a transaxle... meaning the gears and the differential are in the same place and share the same fluid. This makes choosing a proper gear oil a bit more difficult for LSD (limited slip differential - option code 220) equipped cars. The lubricants that provide good smooth shifting may be the wrong ones for the LSD. This issue is addressed with most of todays higher quality gear oils because of the numerous front-wheel drive applications (front-wheel drive cars also use transaxles, though most do not have limited slip)

Anywho, here's a Tech-Session article that may help you:

944 Transaxle Fluid change

Good Luck!

Exclamation

Take the fill plug out before you take out the drain plug!!!

If the fill plug is stuck, you can still drive the car.
