Default What type socket for rod nuts?

i'm about to pull my oil pan to replace rod bearings and I looked at my new rod nuts and they look like some kind of inverted torx bit on the outside.... Do I need some kind of special socket to remove and install these?

thanks.

yeah, they'll have it. I would just buy the whole set to have around, you will occasionally run into 12 point nuts and bolts if you open up a lot of engines or transmissions. They show up in other areas as well, my buddy's lt1 swapped 944 uses them on his clutch slave.

I'm just replacing rod bearings. I probably won't be doing any engine or transmission work anytime soon. Any idea what size socket it is? looks like a 12 or 14mm.

thanks

I may have misunderstood you...most rod nuts are standard 12 point, and you use a standard 12 point socket on them..I dont think I understood what you meant initially when you said an inverted torx. disregard my earlier post. You just need a standard 14mm 12 point socket.

oh ok thanks. I would think all 944s use the same style rod nuts. I was just trying to describe what they look like....sorry I'm being confusing.

The proper torquing of the bolt stretches it and acts much like a lock washer on critical engine fasteners. They should not be loctited, but a drop of oil should be placed on the threads for stock bolts. Most aftermarket suppliers include assembly lube that should be used when torquing their fasteners.

ok cool .thanks.

I thought it'd be a bad idea to use red loctite on the rod nuts
