Red face Loud ticking sound

I went for a short drive in my '86 951 today, and noticed a loud ticking sound under accelleration and when the car is coasting in gear. It sounds like it is coming from the rear end driver's side, and gets more frequent the faster the wheels spin.

Anyone have any idea what the problem is, and how to fix it?

TIA ColinM

look on the inside of that wheel and check to see if the wheel weights used there are the clip-on the rim edge type. If so, look to see if they are hitting the parking brake cable as they come around.

also, check the simple answer - look for a rock stuck in the tread of same tire.

Sounds like it could be the CV joint. Does it get better / worse on turns?

There is a discussion on the old board about this that might help.

DOH!
didn't READ your post thoroughly.
Yes, it is almost surely a CV noise...

I'll be quiet now...

Thanks for the info, the sound is definately in the drivetrain, not from the tires or brakes, and does change when cornering. It goes away completely when the clutch is depressed while the car is rolling. I guess I'll be replacing the left side CV!

Thanks Again!

Matt - no, I am not going this year.
(although I am a PCA member)

got too much to do (garage/951 work).

Was going to run the autoX Sunday, but they want me to pay $60.00 (the weekend cost) to run it.

Maybe next year?
