Default lost 911 guy needs advice

87 924S listed in local Craigslist; I have not yet seen the car but pictures look OK, but it broke the timing belt.

I texted the guy and he just texted back that the first $400 takes it.

I'm looking for a Chump car build. I'm guessing this car will need an engine rebuild. Approximately how much?

Buy it or run away?

looking like a partial engine rebuild with a whole bunch of while you're in there to do's.

may as well go all the way to the rod-bearings if you plan on driving it hard.

You asked about the cost of an engine rebuild in 2 posts.

For $400 expect the block piston bores to be ruined.

It cannot be rebuilt cheaply.
Link to an idea on price:

Many "good" engines for sale from parts cars.

Yes, I did, because I didn't get an answer the first time. I'm a 911 guy. I expect to pay $10-14k for an engine rebuild. I'm simply trying to find out quickly, within an order of magnitude, whether this car is worth salvaging, as for $400 I wouldn't expect any reasonably intact car to last long. But thanks for your help.

If any of you water cooled snots would like to save the car, the link is posted above. The owner was a jerk when I tried to talk to him, so it should go smoothly.

Back to the oil cooled world for me.

Looks like a steal for $400.

Forget about "while you're in there." $400 cars don't need rebuilt engines. Buy it, buy a used head, and have fun.

this..... your next best solution is to source a running engine. a full engine rebuild will be what a shop chooses to charge. the variance is huge, ranging from $7~11 k. the car is basically junk. extremely upside down state of existence. virtually the end of the line. why? because it's not like sourcing a mid-80s 911, doing the restoration and having a car of significant worth when you're done. with this, you have an entry-level Porsche with very little following in the collector/enthusiast world... and not much worth after the running car status is reached. i'm not sure this was the answer you were looking for, but there's a reason this thing is dangling out there for the cost of a decent night out.

Gear down man, no one knows the exact cost on a busted timing belt. If its just bent valves its not that bad (you can get a good used head for $400ish usually) if the bores are shot your in the 5k range and at that point your better off finding a running engine on the cheap. I sold the motor out of my 924S for less than $500 not long ago. It needed a cam (didn't know), but it was still way cheaper than a rebuild.

Don't let the rude PO ruin all the "water cooled guys" for you. We are a decent lot (mostly).

PS I'm the guy that keeps DVM's like you alive, I maintain the DVM software for a 3 different Veterinary outfits here in town. They would be in deep doo-doo without this watercooled snot.

That would be a cool base for a GTR replica.

400 bucks eh? I'm over in Athens, not too far... maybe I'll give the guy a call.

But don't hold your breath if you think I plan on "saving" it...
