Post Front Engine Reseal versus Balance Shaft Reseal??

I'm confused. My car had the front reseal done with my timing belts last year. I have developed an oil leak possibly around the rear of the left balance shaft or balance shaft housing. What seals or gaskets do I need to fix this. Do I need to mess with the timing belts if working on the balance shaft housing or the rear seal/plug.
Any info or knowledge greatly appreciated. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

you should not have to disturb the timing belts. The housing will come off. you will need a half moon shape seal and special sealant. Removal of the housing is tight.

You are having it done?

You shouldn't have to disturb the front of the engine, but the intake manifold will have to come off. There is a bunch of stuff under there that can leak, including the balance shaft housing and rear seal, and the air/oil separator. As long as you're in there, pull the air/oil separator and replace the two o-ring seals.

Carefully check the bolts that secure the balance shaft cover, they are known to break or pull out of the block, especially if the car has seen lots of high rpm. I have mine apart now, I discovered one of the bolts that secures the rear balance shaft bearing saddle (cast into the cover) was broken.

Hey David,
There is a o-ring on a round plug at the rear of both b/s housings. Unfortunately, these can only be replaced with the b/s covers off. To reseal the upper b/s, the turbo must come off. To reseal the lower, I'm guessing the motor mount and exhaust headers must come off. I resealed my upper b/s when I had the turbo off for a rebuild. Plenty of room....once you get the turbo off.

damn this is all bad news for me... i just finished putting a bunch of stuff back together last night that i took out for my oil cooler housing seal replacement project which i was hoping would fix the bad oil leak that i had from just above the power steering pump. just as i was about to crawl back and put the engine block coolant drain plug back in, i noticed that there was already oil on the power steering pump mount.

grrr.... i guess that means that my lower balance shaft is leaking at the front, right? which now sounds like it will involve removal of the tbelt and god knows what else to get that stupid cover off.

i haven't driven my 951 in 3 weeks now. damn these cars a bitch to work on... it took me almost an hour just to put my windsheild washer reservior back in, and i'm not even going to say how long i spent on just unbolting, removing, replacing and rebolting that oil cooler cover.

at least now my oil cooler is supported by a bent out angle bracket and ****loads of zip ties instead of hanging from its hoses.

should i do the seals in both balance shafts together?

Matt,

What is in the way of removing the oil separator to replace the o-rings. Is the turbo down pipe or heat sheild flange in the way. Are there only two o-rings? Where are they located exactly. Thanks.

David, My car's an NA, and I don't know what turbo plumbing is in the way. There is an o-ring seal at each of the two places where the unit fits into the block (two different sizes). I also found that the breather hose that connects to the top of the cannister was loose, as if the hose clamp was not tightened, though it was probably the result of the hose material shrinking. The only diagram I've found is for an NA, and it's here:

Hi David,

I'm not sure how relevent this is, but my car recently started leaking in the front of my engine. My engine rebuild was only 6000km old, so I wasn't too impressed. My mechanic did all the work on the house, and he fixed it right up. During the rebuild, he replaced the balance shaft seals. When he went back in to check out my new leak, he found oil leaking from my upper balance shaft seal. The seal was okay, but the "end cap" that it pushes onto was worn out and grooved. I don't know the technical details of what it all looks like, but it may be something for you to check out.
