1988 Porsche 924s
Hello all forum members. I have recently purchased a 1988 924s red exterior and black interior. I have read a few things on this forum about the maintenance and upkeep of these beautiful machines. After the purchase of my Porsche, I changed the upper radiator hose, which had a small hole in it and was repaired with a rubber hose kit. I have cleaned the spark plugs, changed the oil, and just gave her a good cleaning and topped off her fluids after bleeding her cooling system. I would like to change the gear oil, but I don’t have the clearance or leverage from my back. My dad had a lift in his garage; it sure would come in handy with the stance on this car. LOL. There is a little loose play in the shift linkage and it will clunk into gears if I do not RPM match. Is this the likely answer for the noise upon acceleration and deceleration? I would go ahead and replace it with a short throw kit if so. Everything on her seems to be in working order; the owner had recently performed an eight hundred dollar tune up. He changed the: distributor cap and button, new plugs, plug wires, belts, fuel pump, fuel filter, master cylinder, and clutch cylinder, according to him. As for the play in the shifter, you probably just need a new shift handle. When you come to the Atlanta 944 meet in August hopefully one of our locals Rob will come equipped with a few of his custom modified shifter levers for sale, which completely eliminate the slop in the shifter.

really cool car!! the slop in the shifter can be one of a few things. first off, a walled out shift rod where the rod connects to the shifter or to the transmission's shift linkage. the second may be a worn shifter pin. they tend to become shaped like an hour glass as they wear and they cause slop. can't wait to see more pics of the car as you progress with it!

The slop feels like its in the linkage to the transaxel, i had also read about it being the center of my clutch wearing out, but it feels good and stiff with a full pedal. Im trying to spend a minimun amount of money, so i need to get her on a lift and see, its mostlt during the begining of deceleration and acceleration after the shift. The photos were taken at little five points in atlanta, trust me theres more graffity. Just navi Junk Mans Daughter, it should take you right there. Thanks for the feed back guys.

Does anyone have an online grease fitting schematic, so I can get the oil shop to grease all of the fittings when they change my gear oil? What is the best gear oil to use?

I noticed a couple of weeks ago you posted about the '87 924S.

If you have the '88 it has a little more HP than the '87.
You can get most of the basic maintenance information at

There are no grease fittings.
The CV Joints should be repacked with special grease:

Use basic ATF fluid in the power steering reservoir. NAPA works well.
The oil filter is very important. Use OEM Porsche or Mahle. Do not use an off the shelf filter. It has to have a special "anti drain back valve".

The air filter is not stock. Can you give us a better picture?

Thanks for the information guys, I am glad there is a forum dedicated to maintaining these beautiful machines.. Well, it looks like I have already made a mistake with the oil filter, I will purchase one online. I actually have already used ATF in the power steering pump, so that’s good. I noticed the stock air box was replaced with a cold air intake; I will post a photo for you to see very soon. I think it is just placed there, and is not too stable of a job, actually I know so, as I had to move it when replacing the radiator hose. I’m sure I could find 10 vacuum leaks or more, I love a good treasure hunt.. lol The car is a December of 87, but the insurance has it listed as a 1988. I have all the documentations of the cars previous maintenance, even the sticker price on the dealership window. It has mostly been a two owner car, and one owned it from 92 – 08. I’ll share some document pictures soon also. I will be collecting information from Clarks-Garage and see if I can pick your brains a little more next time.. Thanks again
Also, since I am going to have to drain the oil, exactly how much goes back in. I have read anything from 7qt to 5, 5.5 liters .. 20-50 for the summer Mobil 1.. Sorry if I sound so novice, but the oil pressure and viscosity seems to be a high requirement for these motors, as I believe ya’ll have stated.

Just a newbie to the forum here, but having purchased one of these myself, I'd still be worried if it has the original clutch. If you're experiencing a "clunk" when you go on and off throttle, and it still has the stock rubber clutch, I'd almost bet that it's the clutch. The "rev-matching" comment you made sounds exactly like mine had. TOASTED clutch. Just a poor design on these cars. It's sweet after you replace it, though! And beautiful car, BTW!

really good winter oil for the Atlanta area would be something either M1 0w50 or 5w50. substitute: Walmart sells 0w40 and 10w40 in the low priced 5 quart jugs. summer oil: any of the synthetic 50 weights. I like the low-priced M1 15w50 jugs at Walmart. I change my oil about 2 or 3 times/year. but swap out filters at 1/2 intervals of about 4~5 thousand miles.
