Red face OT: How America HAS Changed

Sorry for the OT, had to stick my .02 in....
The high-line/exotic car dealership I work at in Alabama is closing after 7 years because of investor pullout due to the economy. Due in no small part to the Sept. 11th attacks. November 3 is our last day open. I have already sold the 944 as I don't need and can't afford an extra car right now. Tabor posed the question on the fateful Sept. 11th about how or whether America would change. Tabor,...things certainly have changed for me...

Sorry to hear the bad news David.....what are all the sorority girls gonna do when the crash their 3-ers and need a new car????

Although, I bet the dealership was well on the way to closing even prior to Sept 11. Less than 2 months is a bit quick to eat up all your working capital if things weren't already kinda bad.

I had a discussion with the #2 (of 2) P-car dealer here in Houston a month ago. They said their sales were WAY off, and for the first time in years were getting very agressive in pricing of the new cars. Its about time, sinc they have had "no haggle" (i.e. list) pricing for the past 5 years.

hmmm...time to think about buying a new stret car????? Those new ('02) 996 with the larger engine are REALLY fast, per my buddy who just bought one (upgraded from a '00 996, which he said was a good bit slower)

I too am getting laid off, for the 3rd time in a 1-year period. But the first 2 times were before the terrorist attacks!

Not to play-down the importance of having a job, or the people in our military that are responding to this conflict. But, when I said that the US would not change, I meant in the long run.

On the other hand, when I made that statement I did not expect a military conflict with a nation. I though that this would be handled in a law-enforcement setting. I never expected that the Taliban would be as unreasonable as they have been.

If you are interested in reading about the relatively positive 3rd quarter GDP and the possible onset of a recession come 4th quarter, you can read more here.

The generally accepted definition of a recession is two straight quarters of falling GDP. We do not qualify, at least not yet.

I think I suffer from a failure to communicate.

Wink

I think the formal definition of a recession is when your neighbor loses his job.

A depression is when you lose your own job

txhedg, we had the best 1st Qtr. we ever had in 7 years, but the 2 cars I sold in September (0 after the 11th), along with the numbers since were just the final straw. It wasn't anything to do with working capital, there's plenty of that, the partners just decided they could make more on their investment elsewhere. I don't blame them, it's their money to play with. I definately know the Sept. attacks had a lot to do with it. Total recession/depression here

Thats rough...
As a teenager I haven't noticed much of a change...but that is because I'm not really out in the real world.
I have a part time job...computer repair tech...business is still chugging along there..I suppose when I go to florida this x-mas break I'll see how airport security has changed...

Median home prices here have dropped from $625K down to around $550 in the last six months. The real-estate folks are slightly worried...
