Default FS: 1987 Porsche 924S (big price reduction, new pictures)

I am listing my 1987 Porsche 924S for sale, asking $1600 or best offer. The car has a little over 140k miles on it, and I have a 3" thick stack of receipts from work performed over the past 7 years I have owned the car. I have some pictures of the car below, and I am happy to provide more or arrange viewing of the car for anyone who is interested.

I'm going to provide some more info on the car here, but please send me a PM or an email (mhart1119 AT gmail DOT com) with any questions, and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Highlights of the car:

- Straight non-sunroof body fitted with OEM european-spec bumpers. No cruise control or rear wiper - this car was spec'd out as a lightweight car back in 1987 and I have tried to stay true to that
- Engine completely rebuilt in 2010, very low mileage since then
- Transmission has the short 5th gear and shifts smoothly
- Suspension, wheels, tires, brakes upgraded for use in PCA Driver's Ed events. The car is stable and predictable on the track without being harsh on the road. Here is the car loaded up for a recent Metro NY DE event - the car was comfortable on the 150 mile drive down, kept up with modern Porsches on the track, and had no problem storing a weekend's worth of luggage and track gear.

I've put some more details on the maintenance work done below, but the reason I am selling is that the car recently suffered an engine fire (pictures of damage below). My theory (and it is just that, a theory) is that a gasket in the cam box failed and allowed oil to spray on the headers, where it ignited. Fortunately, the damage seems to have been largely limited to under the hood. My mechanic said that the engine still has oil in it and spins freely, so I believe the engine internals are still good. The fire crew also did some minor damage to the badge panel area when they put the fire out, but that should be easy to fix.

For comparison, here is how the engine looked before the fire:

Finally, 2 quick pictures of the interior (ignore the alignment on the horn button, that will be fixed):

Notable work done on the car over the past 7 years, in chronological order and skipping a lot of details, includes:

- Clutch replaced (08/06, 132k miles)
- Momo seats, sliders, and steering wheel installed, including fire extinguisher mount (09/06)
- Brown interior replaced with black interior, including brand new custom non-sunroof headliner (04/07)
- Install 944 turbo exterior door latches (05/07)
- Koni shocks, 951 S sway bars, and Hawk brake pads installed (04/07)
- Windshield replaced (06/07)
- Replace lifters, install powdercoated cam cover (10/07)
- Replace coolant reservoir, brake master cylinder, brake reservoir (05/08)
- Install european bumpers, front and rear (10/08)
- Install stainless braided fuel lines, Lindsey Racing billet aluminum fuel rail, new injectors, and fuel damper (10/08)
- Install powdercoated intake manifold and throttle body (10/08)
- Replace all rubber fuel lines at fuel tank, including new fuel filter (02/10)
- Rebuild engine - new rings, bearings, seals, gaskets, valves, valve guides, AFM, and more (04/10 134k miles)
- Install stainless braided brake lines (09/10)
- Rebuild axles, adjust timing belts (03/11 136k miles)
- Replace DME relay (04/11)
- Replace A/C compresor, upgrade to R134a (08/11)
- Replace front lower control arms, alignment (08/11)
- Install Dansk muffler, straight pipe, and good condition factory headers (10/11)
- Install Continental Extreme Contact DW tires (03/12 139k miles)
- Replace reference sensors, reference sensor wires, and rebuild DME (05/12)
- Repair minor accident damage from low-speed rear end impact, replace rear bumper (09/12)
- Install Blaupunkt Stereo w/ iPhone control (12/12)
- Replace rollers, check timing belt, replace water pump gasket, flush brake fluid (03/13)

I don't want to add up all those receipts (I am sure I'll get a number that is more than 10x what I'm asking now), but the car got a lot of compliments from people who saw it or rode in it. I think the car could be a good candidate for converting to 944 spec or it could be fixed up to be a fun weekend car. I am open to offers, so please shoot me an email or PM if you're interested. Thanks!

I can't believe this car hasn't sold yet! I thought it was a reasonable price before....

If I had more time on my hands I would buy it just so my 924S would have a friend to hang out with. I have rebuilt Porsches with far more damage.

Mike,

I wish this car was down closer to NC because I would be heading over with cash in hand. Hopefully someone will pick her up soon, and get her back on the road.

I wish this car had been available a year ago when I was looking for something inexpensive, reliable, and cool as a daily driver while I was in Oklahoma!

Thanks Joe. Things are going well, although grad school and now a summer internship have been keeping me busy. I've looked around online a bit for a replacement, but I think I need to sell this car before I can get another. Hope everything is going well with you. Are you going to get any track days in this summer?

James - I wonder if we both know the same guy because I also have a friend in Westport who is looking to sell a 968! My friend, Adam, has a black coupe that he is trying to sell. I'll keep it in mind for once I can really start seriously looking for a replacement

I'm not sure if I understand the question, but if you're asking if my car has these modifications, it does not

Mike,

I am really enjoying the 928, well actually I am enjoying a pair of them. In a strange series of events I ended up with two 928s in my garage. Not sure if I am going to keep both, but for now I have a nice daily driver, and a possible track rat.

There are times I miss the nimbleness of the 924/44/68 chassis, the 928 is a much heavier car and you feel that in every corner, but on long streatches of open road the 928 feels more planted and does a better job of absorbing road imperfections. And then when you plant your right foot in the carpet the noise of the 5.0L 32v is hard to beat.

everyone likes this car. so why not make it roadworthy again.

way I see it here's what we know;

1. all the rubbery/plastic stuff has been burnt off the engine block.

2. engines blow up daily/weekly (so people need your engine).

options (what the economics dictate);

1. physics suggests the good core should go to a car with a blown motor.

2. when fires happen, the result is a bunch of parts and a ton of work. save the bits for a running car or sell them off to the next Jack down the line.

3. get LOUD; sell the motor/keep the car, then drop a good aluminum truck motor or LSx in there.

4. just junk it. seems heartless, but that's the sad fact of life. we spend *tens of thousands of $$$ to keep these buckets of bolts running 15~20 hp over the jap cars....

* (happens to people too).
