That's true but the insurance rates are only going to be different between the different models, any vin will do, even a made up one if it designates turbo and is in the proper format would work.

Also you can ask the salesperson for the vin number of the car he/she has for sale (tell them is for checking with CARFAX). That way you can submit to the insurance company a possible candidate.

With all due respect, All the VIN is, is an identification for a specific car.
I can't see why any insurance company would want that detail's. After all you could buy a 951 which is heavyilt moddified and that would have no bearing on the VIN.
Unless things are different in the US. Here in the UK I can ring my/any insurance company and ask how much it is to cover any vehicle, all I need tell them is make model and year of car.
Sometimes they won't quote you for your renewal till 2/3 weeks before but other than that no problems.
This sounds highly sus, to me, can the rest of you yank's tell meif this is the same for the rest of yall ??
cheers

Seems kind of goofy to me for an insurance quote. But the insurance company probably has a data base that decodes the VIN so they can get the fact that it is a turbo and the year for rating purposes. That J in the VIN example means it is a 1988 model year. And the 2 in position 6 means it has air bags which usually rates a discount.
They could also probably do a title search, see if there are liens on it, salvage title and maybe get an idea of mileage.
