Strong gas smell coming from the rear
I have read a lot of posts on Rennlist, Pelican Parts, and some on 944 Online forums. A good amount of what I found were about the early 83-85 cars with the metal tank. I have a 86 951 so that doesn't apply to me.
Here are my symptoms:
-Full tank of gas I will get a gas smell if I floor my car and the gas sloshes around.
-Yesterday just driving for a while with the A/C on I got a very strong smell of gas from the rear of the car. Tank was about 1/4-1/2 full
-If I open the rear hatch it doesn't smell very strong of gas until I get closer to where the filler neck is and in between the carpet and outside of the car. I stuck my nose almost in the rounded rectangle cutout between the outside of the car and the interior. This is around the hatch opening. It smelled like raw gas. Very strong.
My engine is completely 100% dry of gas. I haven't checked the charcoal canister since I don't smell any gas under the hood. It is only coming from the rear.
What do I need to take apart to look at the filler neck? Would the actual filler neck need to be replaced or just some hoses?

I'd check all the parts on the below diagram could be a hose, boot and inspect the tank to see if there's a puncture.

It could also be the plastic tank in the pillar, I replaced all of my filler neck/gas tank hoses and I still have a strong smell from back there. I now suspect a cracked vapor tank or a cracked fill neck, if my little plastic tank is cracked I intend to check the lines to the front of the car that run to the canister, if they or the canister are clogged then it would explain why it cracked and why the fumes are not sucked in the engine.
I hate the this part of the 944, it seems needlessly complicated

You have to pull the window if you want access to everything without messing up the panel. The plastic tank can not be accessed at all without pulling the panel. Its pretty easy to pull the quarter window, reinstall is not that bad with 2 people and a piece of rope that fits in the weatherstripping.

If it was you would also need to replace the rubber between the filler neck and the body or the hatch gasket. Without a hole in either one the fumes would not have a way inside. I'd say it's likely not the cause.
You should really pull the area apart and inspect before you star throwing money at it.

My 86 951 used to smell like gas every time I filled it or did a run in the twisties when the tank was full. My worse leak was a degraded fuel evap hose on the DS top of the tank. The way I found it was filling the tank, jacking up the car on the pass side only, and watching gas drip out on the ground. In my case I had to pull the TA and drop the tank. The other leak was a metal screw drilled into the tank from the rear hatch by the PO mounting a sub box. Hopefully yours in just a filler/vent hose issue or something easier.

I have torn into my car. After getting the filler neck cover off, I smelled around with my nose. I didn't really smell anything that was leaking. I uncovered the Fuel sending unit and it appears to have some gas smell. I have that gasket on order as well as a fuel cap gasket.
How can I test to make sure the shut off valve is good? I shook it around and it seemed to roll around no issue. I will be replacing a few hoses that are covered in cloth. I am replacing #14-#15 hoses in the picture below. Can anyone tell me where the #19 hose and the #20 part are located at? I would like to replace them as well, but if I can't find them I will forget about it.

Does anyone know where #19 runs too? Can it be replaced without dropping the tank?
I want to make sure I get as much as I can now while its all torn apart.
