manual rack or power rack?

I'll do the lock to lock after work, good idea. Whichever one designates the "sport rack" 00 or 15 that is the one I have. I remember only finding one post that had the same part/casting number as the rack on my car and it was said to be a sport manual rack.

It's not the 00 that designates it, it's the 015. Normal manual racks have the number 011 instead of the 015. I think someone compared the two, and the 015 indeed has the better ratio. My car is up on jack stands right now, but I have the 015 rack and would be happy to compare with someone that has a 011 one.

"944 regular manual rack is 944 347 011 00. 944 347 015 00 should be "sport" version that they used in early offset 944 turbo cup cars, you could get it on regular 951 or 944 too, but in some kind of sport package only. Or so I was told."

^^^ Yessir...
And that sport option was m456 on the early cars...also it was noted that the cars with the quick racks also had option m018...a raised sport steering wheel. My '83 car has both of these options and the 015 rack.

This is a cool thread, I learned something about 944's that I didn't know before!
I also went out just now and checked the manual rack I've had laying around that I haven't had the time to install on the 948...it came out of a junkyard car, I got it for a steal...it's an 015 model. WOO HOO!!!!![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

p.s. If people are interested, I'd be happy to measure the degrees of rotation of my power rack and my sport manual rack from lock to lock for a comparison.

Regular 011 manual rack here, 4 turns lock to lock.
And I'll report the opposite of most and say manual steering sucks. This on a track car doing DEs with < 1hr sessions and I climb out of the car exhausted. I find it harder to catch the car when the tail comes out because I'm slower to respond with the heavier steering and tired arms. And with the higher ratio, I have to shuffle my hands in hairpin turns.
I do appreciate the lack of a hydraulic system and the inevitable leaks. But next time I pull the front suspension I'm putting the power rack back on.

Since I dont have my cars at home, can anyone see how many turns it takes to lock on a car with powersteering?
Im also interested in doing this on my 944 Turbo for the same reasons but I do alot of trackdays and I dont want to shuffle the wheel more than Im already doing with the powersteering.

You do know you can adjust the manual racks to some extent by releasing pressure on the input shaft.

^^^ What does this adjustment do? does it alter pre-tension on the input shaft allowing the rack to turn more easily?
I've been running my car with a de-powered rack for 4 1/2 years now...it's in terrible condition and I'm really looking forward to putting the manual rack in...I'm currently running 18's with 225's on the front of the car, and a smaller steering wheel than factory, and for me it's not too bad, once above 5-10 mph it's fine, below that it's a bear, but i've been managing quite well for a long time now.
I'm going to try the manual rack, I hope it will be a more tolerable drivers car once it's in...if not I may look at putting power steering back in, but that's not going to be super easy :-/
I haven't been able to check lock to lock on the power rack, as I've had a couple thunderstorms roll through haha

Mine is just under 3.5 turns lock to lock. The car is late offset with the factory airbag steering wheel using 225/45 17's.
Power steering is 3 turns lock to lock, from what I can find.

I'm ~3.5 turns lock to lock on my 924s. For those not in the know, the 924s has early offset suspension combined with late offset wheels.
So far, you are the only one with the 4 turn rack. Do you think that extra half turn is what separates liking and disliking manual steering?

I also have the 015 "sport" manual rack. Also the late 363mm steering wheel with extended hub. The early cars with manual steering had 380mm steering wheels.
On 16x7 wheels with 205 tires, it's pretty manageable. Will be putting some 15" fuchs, with 215 tires soon.
Something one should be aware of, is the lack of hydraulic dampening. If you hit a bump on the road, or a pothole, be prepared for the steering wheel to jerk very violently.
