Rise and Drop of Coolant Temperature

Hi-
I've been experiencing problems similar to Matt Olde's, but not exactly. My temps would rise near the third line and then drop down to a tad above the second white line. This usually happens in traffic and at low speeds. When I'm cruising on the highway, it stays a touch above the second white line. Is this a symptom of a bad fan switch, thermostat, etc? Would anyone recommend the lower temp thermostats and switches some compananies sell? If so, from which company? And how difficult is it to replace these parts?
Thanks for the help.

The observations you describe sound like "normal operation" to me. There is approximately 18 degrees of temperature difference between the second and third lines, and this amount of deviation during slow driving is normal.
When your gauge approaches the third line, the fans kick on, and the temp lowers to the second line. When it reaches the second line, the fans kick off (or to low speed) and the temperature rises.

Thanks Greg-
I guess I could just be getting paranoid, especially hearing that Skip never sees anything above the first bar (I'm assuming you mean the first 'skinny' bar, which is what we're referring to as the 'second' bar, right Skip?). But then again, he's running Water Wetter, which I'll use after flushing the coolant.
But any comments of the Low Temp Switches and Thermostats?
Thanks again!

Matt-
Are you referring to the first skinny line in the middle as the "first line"?
My gauge shows:
Fat line at the bottom
Skinny line in the middle
Skinny line at the top
The red arrow/warning mark

The two skinny lines mark the "normal" range. When I mean "second bar" and "third bar" - I'm talking about markings from the bottom of the gauge = eg the two skinny bars! *heh*

There are two "skinny" bars I think. The first one is where mine would stay just barely under, it is the one that isn't parallel but just angled down. I think on the pre-85.5's it is parallel with the road.
