Just noticed, it was up about 20 min. before I posted...

Thanks Tabor, I'm posting your copy on otherboards, hoping you won't mind.

It was basically a Viper with what I think was badly faded brakes going off turn 1 at CMP at what appears to be around 140mph into the barrier. Video taken from inside the car, scarry stuff (as you can now see above).

As a DE instructor, I love this video. Slow it down and watch it several times. This guy didn't "lose his brakes," he tubed that whole entry, and it almost cost him his and the instructor's life. This guy definately seemed to be going way to fast for his abilities.

The instructor first has to remind him to downshift (he points to the shifter, then the driver reaches for and I think, misses a shift). He then stomps on the brakes (he's turning the steering wheel and still going straight). That says the wheels are locked up, not rolling, as in "lost" brakes. Note that the car never really turns after the driver reaches for the shifter. At that point, they are both passengers!

Schneider, you should read This Thread. Greg Fishman of Rennlist knows the Instructor (passenger) and driver. According to him, Dodge came and got the Master cylinder after the crash.

Thanks for the heads up Tabor. I'm still not convinced. I've emailed Greg to get more info. For those who can, watch this thing in slow-mo, frame by frame if you have to. But watch the instructor and the driver just before the crash. Tell me if you think a car with the cornering ability of this monster would understeer so much if the front wheels were not locked. The no brake theory doesn't jive with me.

yeah, on another list (which was linked to me by a member) someone AT the track during the event said there were no brake lights until about 80ft from curve, and skidmarks indicating full lockup and slight turn-in for the last 50 ft...

Wow. I'd have to agree with Maj. Schneider. You can hear the squealing, besides the fact her should have started braking/downshifting long before he did. He downshifted practically when he was on top of the turn, at least it seems from the video. You hear the instructor talking at the end, and my guess is if the brakes failed (at least I would have), the driver would have said "holy crap no brakes" or words to that effect.

Either way, it "sad" for the car, but definately lucky (and good) that they are still alive.

I'll tell you guys what I told Greg in an email. I'm not trying to place blame on anyone. But, it's best to learn from other's mistakes before you make them yourself. We call it "task saturation." I believe he (driver) was focusing on better shifts or something else and didn't "look outside the cockpit" to realize he was way past the brake markers.

For those who do DE's, this is a very good training video, both for instructors and drivers. Just because you have an incredibly capable car, doesn't mean you can't tube it. Our hobby is VERY dangerous. We must always make sure our safety equipment is top notch.

Two things:

One. I want a roll cage and racing harnesses. Notice how the only thing the air bags do is block your view.

Two. Are they upside-down?
