I'm thinking about getting a pair for myself and my wife, for car-to-car communication while travelling - does anybody know about these things? Good brands/features, etc.?
Of course, I want to keep it inexpensive!
Suggestions?

Cobra makes a set that is about $30. Has 2 channels and about a 1 mile range. They look like a kids toy, are purple and aqua color, but work well. I have used them a bunch on trips and also when out and about in the twisties with my friends.

I don't know much about the FRS (Family Radio Service?) radios, they are getting pretty inexpensive, $40 pair. I don't know if you are both carrying cell phones, but Nextel's service (depending on coverage in your area) includes "Direct Connect" which would do what you are looking for, plus some. The last option is a pair of CB handheld units from Radio Shack.
Longtime, I'm not loving these Radius SP50s
Dave- currently on my belt; Verizon phone, Nextel phone, and a Weblink 2-way pager...yes, I am in the industry
