What is the max tire width that normally will work on a 1986 944T 951. The 225 look pretty tight as is, only 3/4" clearance at fender lip.
will a 245 scrape wheel well opening?
also I need a rear whell for a '86 951
p/n 951.362.116.00

You can put a 11" rim in the rear of the '86 with 25mm offset. This fits a 275/40-17 nicely. You'll have to roll a 6" section of the fender at 10 o'clock on the left and 2 o'clock on the right. Also have to strap the parking-brake cable to the spring-plate tightly as well.
Saw a website somewhere where a guy said he had 335mm rear tires. I'm going to have to email him with details. Figured he got one of those wide-body fender kits. Found the website:

Danno, putting an 11" wheel in back of an 86 with that offset(25mm) seems like it would look funny. It would be about 1.5" closer to the car, but would also stick out about 1.5" more than stock. Have you ever seen this, does it look funny? A 10" wheel with a 36mm offset would put the new two inches(more than an 8" wheel) spread the following: 1.5 inches inside, .5" outside.
It my calculation wrong. To me, stock is 8" w/23.3mm offset.
Also, it seems like with 11" of rim, you could put quite a bit more rubber on there.
Dave(confused)

I have an 86 951 with Custom 11" rims, the offset is the key. I personally could not find any one piece rim bigger than 9.5 so I went with custom. Anyhow, I run a 275/40/17 and it fits just fine even with the car lowered almost 2". I did however have to roll *just a little bit* the left side because it would rub at the track under REAL hard turns. This was only due to the fact that quarter panel had been hit at one time.
Even then all I did was take a wooden baseball bat and roll it up under the wheel well and between the tire. Very easy. Lastly, I later added camber for handling reasons which helped even more.
I dont know about the parking brake deal. I didn't have anything to deal with that.
The offset looks real good to.

Anyway, I've going to get a set of 17x10.5/11.5" CCW wheels just like Doc, but maybe with the gold centers. I'm also contemplating just painting them flat black for maximum heat dissipation.
Yes, you do have to roll the rear fenders a little. Just a 6" section from 9 to 11 o'clock on the left and 1 to 3 o'clock on the right.
Doc, are those the larger centers you have? What do the 17x11" wheel weigh anyway?

Danno,
Honestly, I dont' know exactly what they weigh, however I know they're not the lightest... My motivation for buying them was two fold:
First, I couldn't find a good single peice bigger than 9.5 with the 86 offset.
Second, Price was an issue.
So weight was my last concern. As it turns out they look pretty good to. Lastly, they happen to be some of the strongest 3 piece custom wheels around.
So there you have it.
Good luck.

Just to be sure you all know... I believe Doc's wheels are CCW (Complete Custom Wheel)?? Also, any of the quality 3 piece wheel manufacturers will produce any offset/backspacing you want... some examples are Fikse, Kinesis, HRE, and so on... Also, many of these folks also know your car, and will not lead you down a bad path if you explain your needs.

With the correct offset and alignment, along with rolled fenders, you can fit a 315 in the back.

If your goal is to run 275 in the rear, 11 inch wheels are not necessary. In fact, 10 inch wheels are the the ideal width for 275s.
On my '86 I am running 255s and 275s on 9 & 10-inch wheels with no problems and no fender rolling necessary.
