Post 944 Turbo for the track questions?

I am looking at getting a 944 Turbo to use primarily at the track. How capable is the 944 to haul all the equipment necessary to go to drivers education events and lapping day events?

I am used to carrying at least 4 track tires/wheels, couple toolboxes, floor jack, jack stands, misc. parts and all the other misc. stuff necessary. The track junkies know what I am talking about. I need to carry the items in the car and tailoring the car is not an option at this time. Also I don't want roof racks or those mini-trailers. I previously used a BMW E36 M3 and it had all sorts of room with fold down seats etc.. I know the 944 is less capable in that regard, but there must be a way to get what is needed inside the car?

Will four tires fit adequately in the back seat, hatchback area? This is the main concern, since I think I can manage the space for the rest of the stuff.

Does the 944 carry a full size spare tire? That would leave me to find space for only three track tires in the back area.

Next, I would like to install a roll bar. Can you still put the four track tires in the back area? I assume if it's a one-piece roll bar it may be harder to fit stuff back there unless the roll bar has a detachable center section.

Thanks in advance for everyone’s help from actual experienced people.

Brad,
My 951 has a collapsed/inflatable Vredstein spare in the well. You could remove it and place toolbox and assorted goodies in the well, leaving room up top (with the seat folded down) for a set of wheels. My 16x7 and 16x8 BBS RS's with 225/50's and 245/45's fit easily. I hope that helps.

Russ,

Thanks for the reply. That helps alot. So if 16" wheels/tires fit, than would 17" fit?

Do you know if they would also fit with a roll bar?

Thanks,

Brad

Its not the rim size that is crucial, its the over all dimension of the tire. Remember, you can have a 15" rim with a much larger tire than what you would use on your 17s. Right?

Also, why dont you carry less stuff? The wheels will fit, but it will be tight.

What track are you going to? I will be out to the track this season in my 951. good luck to you.

Colin,

You are absolutely correct on the diameter. I should have stated the tire/wheel width would probably be but not necessarily be greater on a 17" than a 16".

Will the tires still fit with a roll bar? Yes I should try to minimize stuff, it's just you never know what you will need.

I used to go to track events in MI, IN area. Also, in the SE up to VIR. Now I am in the Toronto area so I have three tracks within 1.5 hr including Mosport. I may try Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant and Watkins Glen.

What tracks will you go too? Limerock?

Brad,
I don't have a roll bar currently, so I'm not sure. My guess would be that it would be close either way.

Brad, I used to haul my gear to auto-x in my 86-951 before I got my big trailer. I could put 4 16" fuchs with hoosiers in the hatch area but not with it closed. The tires press against the hatch struts and may break them off!. 2 16" fuchs with 245 hoosies fit in the back seat just fine with room on the front passengers floor for a tool box and cooler on the passengers seat, the other 2 wheels will lay flat in the hatch with small gaps to fill in with small gear. A small jack and stands will also fit in.

Hoping for the snow to go away soon so we can start racing again here in Salt Lake City.
