Smile Other engine swap ideas?

Hmmmm....

Been musing about what might make a good engine swap for a 944, without going overboard on the HP angle, just good torque across a wide rev range without the weight of a small-block Chevy...

- 200HP Yamaha V6 from an early Taurus SHO?
- 220HP(?) V8 from a current Taurus SHO?
- NA 300ZX V6?
- NSX V6 (!!!)?

Most inline-6s from Toyota and BMW are probably too long/high, darn...

Thoughts?

The VR6 might be an interesting swap, stock power in the S/S2 range and can be modified to some extent. Add to it that a VW engine would be a little less impure then most others.

Okay. This sounds like a bad idea to me. How much money and time will it take to put these engines in? Most likely more that it is worth. You can bolt in any 944 engine (944/944S/944S2/951/968), these engines will require custom bell housings, etc.

Also, the 300ZX engine is as heavy as a small block 350.

Mazda 20B 3 rotor engine, running a single turbo at 8 psi, built with 3 mm apex seals and bigger oil injectors. The motor will weigh less than your n/a 944 engine and put out in excess of 450 HP with great reliability from low levels of boost and being built with precautionary measures. Torquie like a V8 too. Unfortunately, it will be pricey ($9000 or so for the motor and accessories), not to mention a swap that has never been attempted before.

I am just waiting for someone to make a 3 rotor renesis engine (they should be available in a year or two in 2 rotor versions). Apparently, with the side housing exhaust ports, better materials, better engine management, and different placing of the intake ports, mazda was able to solve reliability problems with the rotary engine by NOT TURBOCHARGING IT, and managed to finesse 280 HP out of 1.3l of n/a displacement, while running very clean and getting much better fuel milage too. A 3 rotor version of the engine should produce over 400 HP with the same reliability of the 2 rotor version.

Sorry, I have had 2 rotary powered vehicles and definitely plan to get another one someday (probably 4th gen RX-7, which is due out in 2003 or 2004, after the RX-8), so I had to give a plug.

-------edit-------

Anyone interested in why I think rotary engines are so cool should read this article: How rotary engines work

Oh...no one mentioned this. I would also go for a Grand Nationial/GNX/Turbo Regal/Turbo Trans Am V6 engine. The reasoning is simple: renegade hybrids already makes a kit that will work with GM V6 motors, this motor is capable of some monster HP (all ready makes around 270 HP stock), and there is LOTS of aftermarket support for these motors. Just a thought...funny no one mentioned this before.

maybe you should actually weigh the motors before opening your mouth about weight, obviously youve listened to toooo many porsche experts. sounds like your the type who should pull a couple of plug wires and then when you put them back on youll feel better.

Of course a 951 engine would be a piece of cake to drop in, as would any other engine from the 944 family, If a rotory hasn't been dropped into a 944 yet, it may be the only car never to have been powered by one.
The turbo V6 idea has been done, and isn't that different from the tired GM V8 discusion. Perhaps this thread could lead in a new direction; IF Renegade were to develop a new kit, what would you like to see tried?

Easy, Supra twin-turbo motor. The 2JZ-GTE. Not too much horsepower stock, 320 horsepower, but it doesn't take much to put it over 500 without problems. The highest horsepower Supra I know of is about 1300 horsepower.

Also, I read what you said in your first post about it being too long or tall, but if your serious about it, I'd check into it. You can find out the exact dimensions at either www.supraforums.com or www.mkiv.com (if I remember correctly)

I could run a 944 w/ a 951 engine very easily right?
If I did do this would anyone want to buy a 944 Engine w/ 43K on it?

Every time someone brings up these mythical Supra engines they get more powerful and more reliable. Like the fish that got away, just more hotrod magazine hype.

I'm very flexible, If you have a good conditioned Turbo How about I pay you half of what it's 'worth' + you get my engine?
It's an '83 Engine and has tons of stuff replaced on it =).

And they are not some mythical engine. It isn't magazine hotrod hype. You should go do some research about the 2JZ-GTE. People are creating some serious horsepower with their Supras. Would you like me to post the video of the dyno run from a 874 horsepowr MKIV Supra?
