Default Water Pump Gasket - Sealant Debate Answered

So I have read way too many threads on water pump gasket and putting on either dry or with sealant.

I bought a remanufactured one from Zim's and I gave them a call since I figure they probably have more experience then just about anyone with these.

The kind folks at Zim explained this to me, to hopefully settle this debate:

- If you have a Green Gasket - Do not use any sealant. It already has a special coating on it.

- If you have a paper/blackish gasket - Use a sealant. Said that they use curil-T, locktite 574, I asked about Permatex Hylomar and they said that works well too. Basically said any non-hardening sealant for gaskets should work fine and that there is way too much thought on which sealant people put into it. Also said use only a little not a lot - put on both parts where the gasket sits between.

I also asked if there is a substantial difference between the green and the blackish gasket. He said performance wise not really, just the green doesn't need sealant. Said that usually with the remanufactured it comes with the blackish paper gasket from the remanufacturer, the green is usually sold by itself. Mentioned that he wouldn't put off installing a water pump to get one or the other, both will work fine.

The black gasket is black on both sides.

The green gasket is green on one side---
black on the other.

Do I apply hylomar sealant to the black side???
