my 944 drives like a boat at high speed

This has quickly become hilarious, you mean it's unsteady around 68-70 mph in a straight line? I went to 110 MPH yesterday and it's rock solid.. some of the back roads here do pretty well in turns near those speeds :P
Sounds like you may have some suspension issues. I'd check everything

I could imagine that some steep passes in the rockies (long steep grade + very thin air) might bog a stock N/A 944 down to 120kph (~75mph IIRC). Certainly should do better than that on the flats or normal hills.
For bushings, I wouldn't limit it to sway bar bushings. At least give the wheel a good wiggle and replace anything that flops around. If you can spare the cash go ahead and replace the castor blocks (rubber bits on the lower rear of the front lower control arm) and the front lower control arm bushings. Neither are particularly expensive. Check ball joints for play and replace as needed. Dito for upper strut mounts.

Tim...you're still an idiot...you know that...right?
Above that....youre driving a POS beater....120km/h? lol ! (the clutch is probably slipping)...thats 3rd gear speed for the 944. My 16years old diesel golf can go 180...
Someone PLEASE sell a decent car to this guy so he stops being...well like he is.

Yummy,
At 258,000 miles on the original shocks, my '88 944 still "handled" securely... although it was a rather punishing ride. The new struts & shocks made bumps and broken pavement wholly tolerable.
If your 85.5 is a speedboat at 70mph, immediately get a shop to diagnose why.
Ball joints, caster blocks, oily sway bushes and tie rods are likely culprits.
Does Canada not require annual safety inspections like Virginia does mate?

I live in the rockies and have gone up I-70 from denver to the Tunnel many many times in my old 924S. You can use 5th if you keep the speed at 80, but you do need to drop down to 4th if you lose momentum (a-holes cutting you off to go 60) as it drops you out of the powerband on a fairly steep incline. My 944S does not suffer quite as much due to the extra power, but the taller gearing hurts it too, so it also requires 4th gear use.

Tim...you've had 924s and 944s for YEARS...you're actually older in the 924/44 business than many people around...i simply dont get it how you can get into these discussions...and how can you not diagnose a problem like that by simply looking under your car..thats why i'm rude.

Fine, check bushings with tip of screwdriver to see if they are soft(dont push to hard eh?)...if they are soft like marshmallows..they need replacement. Replace shocks. Check alignment, check tire pressures and if you're running on 205/65(60 or 55)/15 then its normal to get lower traction and boat like movement in certain conditions from such tire sizes.
Regarding fifth gear going uphil and not going over 120....5th gear should get you up most uphills as long as the revs read 3500 or more(unless you're driving a turbo-diesel, most cars will behave the same)...but i think 120km/h is under 3500RPM isnt it? next time you drive there, try fifth gear but first rev 4th higher so you shift into 5th and you're at 3700RPM....if even then the car wont climb then your engine might need a rebuild.
