Default Clutch slave leaking, replace master?

Is it agreed that these should both be replaced at the same time? I am pretty darn sure the slave is leaking but the master looks fine.

Any preference for sources or will any rebuilt be fine? I it worth cutting cost and rebuilding the slave myselft?

Any source for a raided clutch line whie I am at it?

I've never tried a rebuild kit, but I've done research on here about them, and most people say you shouldn't rebuild it until you have it open to make sure the bores aren't pitted and damaged (junk).

Someone (theedge?) posted links to sources for a braided line and fittings to replace the clutch hose, for a total of like $50 or so. Maybe try a search.

Everything I've read here tells you to replace both. It makes sense - they're both the same age and have seen the same wear and tear. I have no first hand experience of replacing just one and having the other fail shortly afterward.

If you replace only one, someday the other one will fail and you "get" to bleed the clutch all over again. Since this is one of the most miserable jobs on a 944, unless you're totally broke, I'd replace them both and only bleed once.

Good suggestions from FR and I agree to replace both at the same time and bleed once!

I replaced both when I changed out my MC. Figured it was somewhat cheap insurance!

+++ change both and also change the hose between them and the hose from the reservoir. Unless that is you like to repeat the job 2 or 3 times. Bench bleed before fitting, use a Motive and safely jack the rear as high as you can for the final bleed when everything's bolted together. GL

Thanks everyone. I think I posted knowing the right answer but was struggling to accept the extra "investment"

If I'm going to all the trouble, new (braded) line just seem to make sense. I found one parts list, but I'm having trouble sourcing the proper an4 brake line it referenced. The an3 seems common. I guess I can look at other brands.

Oh, the one bright side in this. I did a charcoal canister delete a few years back. The MC is nearly in plain sight.

Summit racing has a plethora of AN fittings, as well as http://www.hrpworld.com. Those are my two main sources.

When I did my slave I ignored the advice to replace both. Hey if it ain't broke don't fix it Jack. Then I was replacing the master threee months later and bleeding again.

Listen to wisdom of the forum young grasshooper, oh and get a power bleeder before hand.

Link to the cheap and easy DIY power bleeder:

I replaced just the slave 2 months ago, so far so good... I even
cheaped out and got the made in China one on Ebay, heck it was 1/4 the price of a German one.

Maybe I got lucky but bleeding was a simple 2 min affair...

+1 million on the Motive Power Bleeder, go for the European black label one too. The guy above is really lucky, lol

The hydraulic line between the Master Cylinder and Slave Cylinder may look good but under pressure may bulge. The rubber inside the line also deteriorates over time. Best to replace the three units at the same time. Bench bleed the master cylinder.

Cheers,
Larry

I agree that bench bleeding makes the difference between a short & painless bleeding procedure, or hell.

I personally hate the Motive power bleeder. I have one, and I do use it, but it's so cumbersome. Last time, the hose burst and a jet of brake fluid sprayed 10ft across the shop. If you use a Motive (OP or anyone else) I recommend you change that hose asap. Either keep it fresh by replacing it often, or upgrade to something better that is actually brake fluid resistant (but not clear - oh well!). I also hate the way it overfills the reservoir. I like the 2-man pedal pumping method, but for when I'm on my own I have the power bleeder.

I just bought both my Slave and Master cylinders from Vertex auto last week. Roughly $100 per cylinder...not terrible for porsche prices. My slave is installed and bled (used a hand pump bleeder), waiting to see if the master explodes on me. If you'd like to buy it off me at a discount from the online price I'd consider it...I have an autocross coming up this weekend and some extra gas money would be nice! lol.
Good luck, keep us posted!
