Default What to replace my rusted muffler with?

After replacing my tranny I noticed my muffler is almost falling off it is cracked where it attaches to the pipe and there are cracks on the muffler body also.

I want a cheap replacement muffler and get it welded, but I don't want my car to sounds like a honda with a fart can. I want to drive home soon so I can't get one online or get a good used one. How will I know if it will sound like **** on my car when I go to pick a muffler from the parts store?

also is the stock pipe 2.5 inches?

I believe the stock piping is slightly smaller than 2.5"

I have a Flowmaster 50 delta flow that a PO put on mine. Sounds pretty damn good. I don't know how cheap "cheap" is. It'd probably run you about $60.

Heres a video of my car getting sea foamed, but good recording of the exhaust note. Id start it around the half way point.

Paid about $100 for my Magnaflow. No regrets.

If you want cheap, a thrush welded muffler is basically the same thing as a flowmaster 40 series and they are like 35 bucks. I needed a replacement on my little work truck and picked one of these up and it sounds good...throaty and deep, minimal drone. It's not too loud either, but definitely has presence. I really want to hear what 944 sounds like with one.

once I hopefully finish my transmission install today i'll drive it with no cat back lol. hopefully i won't get pulled over by cops..... I rarely see cop cars where i'm at now lol so i think i'll be fine.

yeah I was thinking of the thrush welded muffler. it's not 35 bucks here though...... canadian tire website says starting at 60 bucks..... still fairly cheap

I had a flowmaster 40 series on a 924 before with no cat and it sounded like ****.

i find the stock exhaust too quiet for a sports car so I don't mind a bit louder but I don't want it to sound like a ricer or a harley lol.

and those thrush mufflers and flow masters I think are generally designed for american v8s not 4 bangers so probably why the flow master 40 sounded like **** on my old 924. it might sound better on my 944 with the cat.

When my factory muffler finally crapped out I drove it for about a week with no cat-back (was my only car at the time). Sounded horrible. I have a Borla XR-1 on mine right now. Picked it up at a shop in town, ran me like $120 I think.

It's not overly loud either, and I have a 2.5" with no cat.

In my old 924s I had a high flow cat, and 2.5" inch piping along with a magnaflow muffler. It was good sounding but a bit loud and had a little rasp in the really high rpm range.

It's not the cheapest option, but I can't say enough about my Dansk cat back. The tone is similar to stock but a touch louder under acceleration. It doesn't sound harsh or raspy at all. At speed, it is very tame with no drone.

I think i'm going to go with the thrush welded muffler they are like 50-70 bucks here... and then i'll have to get a shop to weld it. i'll let you guys know if it sounds horrible. i found a video on youtube of a 924S with a thrush welded and it sounds okay.

You need the cat, or at least a resonator. The resonance in the pipe from the exhaust manifold to the muffler is horrendous, especially around 3500rpm and up. I have 3" pipe connected to MSDS headers with a high flow cat and Walker maxflow muffler. Runs great and sounds really good. Still a bit loud at that rpm range, but way better than no cat/resonator and a Maxi-Flow or Thrush.
