sorry to hear. cayman's make great track toys, and in theory, basically the desendant of the 924/44/68

i'd say look over the damage as a whole(think what you can't see too) and maybe swap an 3.0 in if it's worth it

Sorry to hear it, your car was looking good when I bought the dash from you.
I thought you had the car setup the way you liked it so maybe a rebuild would be more money up front but at least you know the cars history, and it may be cheaper in the long run than starting over with a new car.

That said, if you are going to sell some stuff please let me know.

Thanks for the kind and supportive words everyone! The car was getting pretty close to being completely set up (the last major items were really the dashboard and suspension, both of which I have parts stocked up for) but I don't know if it would have ever really been done. I really enjoyed the project aspect of the car and always looked for a way to improve something - this led me to try 3 different exhaust systems, 2 steering wheels, 2 sets of seats, etc.

I am going to talk to the shop today, so hopefully I'll get a bit more clarity on what happened. I'll try to keep this thread updated as i find out more

I was a few cars back with a student. I wish you kept it on the track . It got bad when you drove onto dry grass.

I'm not sure how far back you were, but it was a bad situation even before I drove off the track. When I saw the smoke coming out of the center console, my primary concern became finding a safe place to stop the car so my instructor and I could get out safely (others said that they saw flames even before I got to the turn apex too). Given that turn 1 is a blind turn and that I was afraid I could be leaking something, I thought pulling off the surface entirely seemed like the best way to minimize the risk from someone missing a flag and coming through the turn full blast when we got out of the car and to minimize the risk I would grease up the track.

Fortunately the grass was still pretty wet from the rain on Friday and the NJMP fire crews responded quickly.

We were behind you as I close my eyes to remember. The flames were coming out from under your car on the front straight. I think an oil line came loose and hit your exhaust.? The corner worker responded instantly as I was also pointing at your car. You did fine. lol. now you can move up a run group. lol We were in the black Cayman

I talked to the shop today. On the plus side, they said that the engine still has oil in it and spins freely, so the mechanicals are probably OK. They said it should look less bad once all the soot is washed off, but there would definitely be a fair amount of work involved in getting it back on the road (and the root cause of the fire is still unknown - the shop couldn't find an obvious culprit).

After a lot of thought this week, I think that I will sell the car and start working towards a new car (I'm leaning towards a Cayman at the moment, but that's a long story for another thread). Once I get some good pictures of the car's current condition with a real camera, I'll post up a for sale thread and also start marketing it locally. In the meantime, I'll still hang around here, and hopefully someday I'll get another 944 series car.

Thanks again to everyone for the support and encouragement.

No one got hurt, you didn't ball it up, hell, it could have been far worse for you and others, but it wasn't.

You did everything right from what I read.

Thanks Joe. Yeah I'm sorry if my first post wasn't more clear, but it was a fire under the hood (or as one guy put it, a "carbeque"). Things have been pretty busy for me lately, but I will be getting the car properly up for sale soon. This will probably put a hole in the rest of my track season this year, but hopefully I can make it to the next Rennlist NY/NJ/CT drive.

That is sad Mike. Glad you are OK and your instructor is too. Can't imagine how you feel when you loose something you put so much into

Mike, Sorry to hear. Glad your ok. Never got to meet you at the track yet. I have not even been able to start racing my 924 yet. Between work and family every weekend comes and goes. Let us know what you find out. Maybe it's not as bad as u think.

If you do decide to sell stuff, let me know. I am sure you have some stuff I might want.
